  • Survey will collect information on child care needs

    An estimated 1,620 faculty and staff have been asked about their child care needs -- current or future -- in a survey from university human resources that closes Feb. 19. It asks for information about child care use, access, satisfaction, affordability, waitlist experiences, anticipated needs and challenges.

  • New category in CyHire is for undergrad positions in research or creative activity

    A new job category in the university's job site, CyHire -- EUReCA position -- lets faculty post undergraduate positions for a research project or creative endeavor. It's the acronym for the Exploring Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity program, formerly the university-wide Undergraduate Research program.

  • A tax withholding update for 2026

    Tax changes in last summer's One Big, Beautiful Bill Act compelled the IRS to update its Form W-4, the employee's withholding requests, and withholding tables. Iowa, which largely follows federal tax law, has done the same. Employees are encouraged to do an annual review of their W-4s in Workday and complete a paycheck checkup.

  • Geese deaths not replicated, so far

    Last month, tests conducted at the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory confirmed H5 avian influenza in several Canada geese carcasses found near Lake LaVerne. No other dead geese have been found in the two weeks since the initial discovery.

  • Fines kick in for hands-free driving law

    Following a six-month warning-only period, on Jan. 1 drivers not complying with the new state law will be charged with a moving violation, a simple misdemeanor with a $100 fine. A driver who causes a serious injury while using their device illegally could pay a $500 fine and even have their driver's license suspended.

  • Lake LaVerne improvements are slated for summer

    Work to drain and dredge Lake LaVerne to deepen it will begin in mid-May and wrap up next fall. As planned, the project also will reshape and stabilize the shoreline and add a seating area along the north side and multipurpose plaza in the southeast corner.

  • Campus phone migration nears the halfway mark

    The campus phone service migration from Cisco Webex to Microsoft Teams Voice is about 45% complete, with a target of transitioning all employees by the end of April 2026. So far, about 10% of migrated employees opted into using a desk phone rather than the computer software, known as a softphone.
