Summer camp is for HS students interested in any Design program
The College of Design and ISU Extension and Outreach will offer an immersive summer camp for students entering grades 9-12 and spring 2019 high school graduates. Design Dimensions is a six-day, five-night camp scheduled June 9-14 with a day-camp option June 10-14. Programming will occur in the College of Design, and participants will stay in campus residence halls and enjoy evening activities in Ames. Cost is $495 for the overnight camp and $345 for the day camp. Register online.
Regents schedule first tuition reading for May 1
The state Board of Regents will hold a special telephonic meeting at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 1. The primary purpose is to hold a first reading of proposed tuition and fees at Iowa's three public universities for the 2019-20 academic year. Final approval would come at the board's June 5-6 meeting. Also on the agenda is final approval for promotion and tenure requests for 70 Iowa State faculty.
Art Mart is May 8-10 at the Memorial Union
Art Mart, the annual art sale at the Memorial Union, will be held May 8-10 in the Campanile Room. Hours are 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m.-3 pm. Friday. Find one-of-a-kind gifts created by members of the ISU gaffer's guild and Workspace instructors and students, including pottery, jewelry, watercolors, handmade soaps and the popular "mystery boxes," filled with unique treasures donated by Workspace participants.
Summer, fall course materials are due now to ISU Book Store
Course material orders for summer and fall semesters are due now to designated coordinators at the ISU Book Store. If your department does not have a coordinator, email Katelyn Engh (kengh@iastate.edu) or Kimber Damour (kdamour@iastate.edu). Course materials include textbooks, manuals, access codes, eBooks, course packets, workbooks, OER/immediate access, and lab, office and art supplies.
Classrooms available as after-hours study spaces
Classrooms in four buildings will be available as evening study spaces during dead week, April 29-May 3. The classrooms will be open to students on a drop-in basis from 5:10 to 11 p.m. Monday-Friday. Room locations are:

Hort farm email list provides produce sale updates
A mailing list is available for those who would like to receive email notifications about the Horticulture Resarch Station's community produce sales. Fruits and vegetables are locally grown and harvested the day before delivery. Sales support ongoing research at the site.
Candidate forums scheduled for MU associate director search
Candidate open forums are planned for three finalists in the search for an associate director of the Memorial Union. The position is responsible for planning, management and oversight of the MU, incluing operations, budget, policies and services. More information, including candidate resumes and evaluation sheets, are available on the student affairs search website. The forums will be held from 11 a.m. to noon in the Memorial Union. SAVMA Scamper is April 27
Iowa State's chapter of the Student American Veterinary Medical Association will host its annual 10K/5K "Scamper" Saturday, April 27, at the College of Veterinary Medicine. Dogs are encouraged but must be on a leash. The 10K begins at 9:45 a.m., followed by the 5K at 10 a.m. Registration costs $20 for ISU students and employees through April 26 and $30 on race day. The public pays an additional $5.
Carriquiry is guest on Thursday radio show
Alicia Carriquiry, Distinguished Professor of statistics and director of ISU's Center for Statistics and Applications in Forensic Evidence (CSAFE), will be a guest in the second half hour (12:36 p.m.) of Iowa Public Radio's River to River program Thursday, April 25. She is joined by Chris Fabricant of the Innocence Project, which promotes DNA testing to exonerate people convicted in error and to reform the criminal justice system. 2019 is the 10th anniversary of a national report on forensic science that led to the creation of CSAFE.
Iowa Staters announced for Goldfinch Room concert
Singer-songwriter soloists Chris Myers and Fred Love, both Iowa State employees, will perform in the Goldfinch Room, Stephens Auditorium, Saturday, May 11 (7 p.m.). Myers previously lived in Nashville and plays a fusion of folk, rock, pop and soul. He is a teaching lab coordinator in the ecology, evolution and organismal biology department. Love, a science writer in the office of university relations, plays a blend of country, folk and blues. Reserved tables are available for four ($40) or two ($25). Snacks, wines, sodas and craft and domestic beers will be available for purchase.
Parks Library is open 24/7 April 28-May 9
Parks Library will be open 24/7 from 10 a.m. Sunday, April 28, through 2 a.m. Thursday, May 9. Dead Week (April 29-May 3) will feature daily sessions of Barks@Parks and other stress-reducing activities, including chair massages from noon to 3 p.m. Monday and 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Friday.
Plant sale runs May 11-12
The annual plant sale at Reiman Gardens, which benefits many campus groups, will be held Saturday, May 11 (9 a.m.-6 p.m.) and Sunday, May 12 (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) in the gardens' parking lot. Choose from perennials for sun and shade; herbs and vegetables; Iowa natives; woody plants including trees, shrubs and Buck roses; container annuals; hanging baskets; strawberries; the 2019 Hosta of the Year (Lakeside Paisley Print) and prefinished mixed containers. Credit cards, cash and checks are accepted.
Honors program plans poster presentation May 1
The university honors program invites the university community to the spring 2019 poster presentation and reception Wednesday, May 1 (3-5 p.m., MU Great Hall). Spring and summer graduates as well as other honors students will be present to answer questions and speak with individuals interested in their projects.
Union Drive section will close April 22
The second phase of this spring's Union Drive reconstruction project will begin Monday, April 22, closing a section of the road south of the Student Services Building (from east of the lot 5 entrance to east of the lot 65 entrance). Pedestrians should follow signage that reroutes them through the area. Starting Monday morning, CyRide will detour 10 of its routes, generally using Sheldon Avenue and Lincoln Way.
Forums planned for international students and scholars director finalists
Three finalists will interview April 22-26 in the search for the next director of the international students and scholars office. Open forums are scheduled during the campus interviews. Live United food drive kicks off April 29
The 11th annual Live United food drive will take place April 29-May 9 on campus. Donations will benefit Story County food pantries, ensuring children and families have food during the summer. Nonperishable items and monetary donations can be dropped off at 18 sites on campus. The food drive's website includes campus dropoff locations, a list of preferred donation items and information on making monetary donations in person or online. Questions may be directed to food drive co-chairs Haley Cook, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, or Tara Fisher, Ivy College of Business.
Blowout price continues at Wednesday ice cream sale
Members of the dairy science club will sell their 8-oz cups of ice cream for $1 (half price) April 17 as they approach the end of their selling season. The weekly sale is held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Kildee Hall outside the north doors to Lush auditorium. Today's flavors are vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, Reeses, Heath caramel, Oreo and Thin Mint.
Reiman Gardens to extend hours for tulip display
Reiman Gardens will extend its weekend hours during peak week to allow visitors to enjoy more than 55,000 tulips and thousands of other spring blooms. The gardens will be open until 8 p.m. April 27 and May 2-4. Gold, red and black tulips highlight the display that was inspired by the 2019 theme "Toys & Games." The gift shop also will stay open until 8 p.m. on those days, but the butterfly wing will close at 4:30 p.m. The extended hours offer an opportunity to see the spring bulb display inside the tropical plant conservatory.
Stanford political scientist to speak about partisanship
Political scientist Shanto Iyengar, a Stanford University professor, will speak about the intensification of partisan effect in a seminar in 368A Heady Hall from 3:40 to 5 p.m. April 26. Iyengar’s teaching and research address the role of the news media and mass communication in contemporary politics. The seminar is presented by the economics and political science departments.
Graduate student research conference is April 10
The Graduate and Professional Student Senate will hold its annual student research conference Wednesday, April 10 (9 a.m.-7 p.m., Memorial Union). The event will include research posters and presentations, a three-minute thesis competition and a keynote address on human mating strategies by David Buss, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas, Austin. 'PJ Masks' tickets go on sale April 5
Tickets for a May 30 musical production, "PJ Masks Live: Save the Day!" in Stephens Auditorium go on sale to the public at noon Friday, April 5. The tour is based on the animated superhero characters in Entertainment One's series for preschoolers, which airs daily on the Disney Junior channel. The Stephens show begins at 6 p.m. Tickets, $29-$59, will be sold via Ticketmaster, including the Stephens Auditorium ticket office (noon-6 p.m. Monday-Friday).
April is Earth Month
The office of sustainability has compiled a broad list of opportunities to help members of the campus community celebrate Earth Month in April.
Forever True Week planned for April 8-12
The ISU Foundation will celebrate its historic $1.5 billion fundraising campaign, Forever True, For Iowa State, on campus April 8-12 with Forever True Week. Booths with snacks, games and giveaways will be stationed throughout campus during the week, and outside Parks Library every day, from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Check out the schedule online.
ISU Dining will host April 10 customer appreciation event
ISU Dining will host a customer appreciation event on central campus Wednesday, April 10 (10:30 a.m.-1 p.m.) Culinary staff will compete in a Top Chef challenge, where teams create a special dish visitors can sample, then vote for a favorite. Visitors can enter a drawing for prizes that include a dinner for 10 prepared by ISU chefs, Fitbit watch, wireless speaker, bluetooth headphones and Nintendo Switch Kit with Super Mario.
Student wellness expands mental health efforts
Student Health and Wellness expanded its efforts in mental health promotion and suicide prevention this year, hiring program coordinator Carrie Giese and assembling a 25-member mental health task force of staff, therapists, police officers and students. This fall, employees and students will be invited to choose from among a mix of training formats -- online modules, shorter sessions and daylong workshops -- all with a focus on mental health promotion and suicide prevention.
Student employee breakfast is April 17
All students employed on or off campus are invited to a breakfast on the go Wednesday, April 17 (7:30-10:30 a.m., ground floor of Beardshear Hall) in celebration of National Student Employment Week. Register for door prizes while you're there. Congratulations to Iowa State's 2019 Student Employee of the Year Thomas Polzin and to Students of Distinction Crystal Brandenburgh, Benjamin Escobar and Nicholas Oppedal.
Resiliency expert is on campus this week
Luke Seaward, executive director of the Paramount Wellness Institute, Boulder, Colorado, adjunct faculty member at the universities of Colorado (Boulder) and Norther Colorado (Greeley), and expert in stress management, will give two campus presentations this week. The first, "Mindfulness in the Workplace" is for university employees and students only and begins at 3:30 p.m. April 3 in the Carver auditorium. This presentation examines the concept of mindfulness and navigating distractions, explores the science behind neuroplasticity and concludes with several mindfulness exercises to help attendees harness their concentration skills for better work performance and optimal health. On April 2, he will present a public lecture, "Getting a Good Night's Sleep: Rest, Resiliency and the Art of Digital Detox" (7 p.m., MU Sun Room).
