Athletics equipment sale is June 1
The athletics department will host its annual equipment sale Saturday, June 1 (8 a.m.-noon, Sukup End Zone Club, Jack Trice Stadium). Shoppers may begin lining up at 6 a.m. outside Gate 3. Payment by credit/debit card is preferred; one checkout line will accept cash but no checks will be accepted. No bags, purses, food or drink are allowed into the sale. Items are priced from $5 to $400 and include football helmets (cardinal, cardinal chrome, black, white); football jerseys from the 2017 and 2018 seasons; basketball, soccer and softball jerseys; and other clothing and footwear items.
Comedy College alumni to do show at Stephens
Alumni of ISU's "Comedy College" Honors seminar will perform Tuesday, May 28 (7:30 p.m., Celebrity Cafe, Stephens Auditorium). Doors open at 7 p.m.; show content is suitable for an adult audience. The master of ceremonies is Gavin Jerome, instructor for six semesters of the 2-credit Honors seminar on the art and science of standup comedy. Scheduled performers include Peter Orazem, professor of economics and former Ames city councilman; ISU alum and touring comedian Matt Banwart; comedienne Onnalee Kelley, Des Moines; and Ames' 'Captain Midnight,' Roman Lynch. Opening the show are two recent graduates of the honors seminar, Jack Wannarka and Avery Wickham. Tickets are $10 at the door, $7 in advance, either online or at the Stephens Auditorium ticket office (noon-6 p.m., Monday-Friday).
Free gardens admission this weekend for veterans, active military
All active-duty military and veterans are admitted free of charge to Reiman Gardens over Memorial Day weekend (Saturday-Monday). The gardens are open daily 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the butterfly wing closing at 4:30 p.m.
No CyRide on Memorial Day
CyRide, the city-university bus system, will not operate on Monday, May 27, part of the city of Ames' recognition of the Memorial Day holiday. Buses will resume their normal summer scheduling Tuesday, May 28.
Save the date: 'Seeds' film screening is June 16
A film showcasing the science and beauty of seeds, produced by Seed Science Center director Manjit Misra, will be screened at Reiman Gardens Sunday, June 16 (6 p.m.). The hour-long "Seeds! The Diversity of Wonder" debuted in March at the Environmental Film Festival in Washington, D.C. The film's purpose is to make seed science accessible to a wide audience and inspire a new generation on a topic many take for granted. Admission to the screening is free.
Rummage RAMPage organizational meeting is May 15
ISU's office of sustainability and the city of Ames will cohost an informational meeting about the 4th annual Rummage RAMPage (July 26-Aug. 3) for local nonprofit organizations that want to assist with running the sale -- and earn a share of sale proceeds. The meeting will be held Wednesday, May 15 (6 p.m., conference room 135, Ames City Hall). Last year's event raised $18,607 for local nonprofits and diverted an estimated 51 tons of furntiture and household items from landfills.
Library's tech lending, after-hours return to temporarily close
Construction beginning May 10 on a remodeling project on the south side of Park Library's first floor will have some immediate impacts on library patrons. Tech lending will be closed May 11-19, and all devices must be returned by 5 p.m. May 10 to avoid late fees. Starting May 13, the circulation desk will temporarily move to the north side of the main lobby and the after-hours book drop will be closed. New circulation desks and after-hours book drops will be installed as part of the remodeling. For more information, see the library's website for the project.
Reiman Gardens offers free admission May 17
As part of National Public Gardens Week (May 13-17), Reiman Gardens will offer free admission all day Friday, May 17. That day includes an installment of the gardens' Meet-A-Scientist (10 a.m.-2 p.m.), an informal, hands-on, drop-in program led by professionals who are Reiman Gardens science communication fellows. The gardens has a goal of raising $5,000 for youth programming during the week.

The athletics department will hold an equipment sale Saturday, June 1 (8 a.m.-noon or while supplies last, Sukup End Zone Club in Jack Trice Stadium). Items for sale include Nike game jerseys, football helmets and other team apparel (limit of one helmet and one jersey purchase per person). Payment is by debit/credit card or cash; no checks. Shoppers may line up no earlier than 6 a.m. outside the stadium's gate 3; parking is available in lots S3 and S5.
Bike to work week is May 13-17
National Bike to Work Week is May 13-17. Ames residents are encouraged to bike to work or school. Mayor John Haila and Ames City Council members will host a free continental breakfast for bike riders Monday, May 13 (7-9 a.m., in front of City Hall, 515 Clark Ave.). The event will move to the City Hall foyer if weather is a concern.
Reiman Gardens announces access program for low-income families
Reiman Gardens has joined Museums for All, a program of the Institute of Museum and Library Services that encourages people of all backgrounds to visit museums and build lifelong museum-going habits. Those receiving food assistance (SNAP) benefits receive free admission to Reiman Gardens for up to four people when they present a SNAP electronic benefits transfer card. Similar free or reduced admission is available at more than 250 art or history museums, science centers, zoos and botanical gardens in 40 states across the country.
Alumni association's 2020 travel preview is May 23
The ISU Alumni Association will announce its 2020 Traveling Cyclones schedule of trips Thursday, May 23 (4-6:30 p.m., Reiman Ballroom, Alumni Center). The event is free and open to the public; register by noon May 16. Food and beverages from around the world will be served.
Operations and finance AVP finalists on campus this month
Four finalists for an assistant vice president position in the operations and finance division will interview on campus May 6-14. The AVP for specialty business services and cultural arts was created as part of the division reorganization announced in March. The position oversees the Iowa State Center, logistics and support services, printing services, transportation services, Veenker golf course, museums, public radio, ISU Book Store and Reiman Gardens. Public forums will be held from 8:15 to 9 a.m. in the Memorial Union for each candidate; names will be released one business day prior to forum dates.
