Extension faculty and staff receive national awards
The National Extension Association of Family ad Consumer Sciences recognized several ISU human sciences specialists and faculty with these awards:
- Distinguished Service Award, Vera Stokes, nutrition and wellness
- Continued Excellence Award, Brenda Schmitt, family finance
- Greenwood Frysinger Award for professional growth opportunity, Sara Sprouse, nutrition and wellness
- Excellence in Multi State Collaboration (first place), Shannon Coleman, assistant professor and food safety state specialist
- Communications Award, Internet Education Technology (third place): Lori Hayungs, Mackenzie Johnson, Mackenzie DeJong and Barb Dunn Swanson
Stegmöller receives APLU research mentor award
Elizabeth Stegmöller, associate preofessor of kinesiology, received the 2019 Undergraduate Research Mentor Award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) Board on Human Sciences. The award recognizes a faculty member in the human sciences for exceptional performance as a research mentor to undergraduate students. Stegemöller leads kinesiology’s role in ISU's Freshman Research Initiative and has deeply engaged graduate students. Her interdisciplinary research team examines the effect of music on motor cortical activity in individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Her student research team includes 21 juniors and seniors, 12 first-year students, and six masters and doctoral students. Stegmöller has placed a particular emphasis on recruiting student researchers from underrepresented backgrounds.
Greder to receive national extension diversity award
Kimberly Greder, professor of human development and family studies and family life extension state specialist, and two work teams will receive the 2019 National Extension Diversity Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Cooperative Extension and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities in November. The award recognizes significant contributions and accomplishments in achieving and sustaining diversity and pluralism. The 2019 award acknowledges Greder and the work teams who provide the programs "Juntos Para Una Mejor Educación," which helps Latino youth and their parents identify paths to post-high school education; and "Abriendo Caminos," a curriculum designed to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce obesity risk.
