Voorhees Supply Chain Conference is April 24

Registration is open through April 16 for the annual Voorhees Supply Chain Conference, hosted by the department of supply chain management, on Thursday, April 24 (9 a.m.-3:30 p.m, Gateway Hotel and Conference Center). Learn from industry leaders who will talk about enhancing supply chain management through artificial intelligence. Featured speakers include alumnus Chad Nelson (2007  degree in economics), associate director of intake, damage and returns reduction at Best Buy. Four credits of continuing education are available.

Suicide awareness walk is April 19

Student Health and Wellness is organizing a suicide awareness walk, "Out of the Darkness," on Saturday, April 19 (registration begins at 9 a.m., campanile south lawn). A 10 a.m. pre-walk program will feature members of the Triangle fraternity and the parents of former fraternity member Jeremy Onyango, who died in October 2022. Teams of walkers are encouraged; volunteers may register to walk or make a donation in support of suicide awareness.

Be a part of strengthening arts, culture in Iowa

Iowa State is the site for the Iowa Arts Council's final (of seven) 2025 Regional Arts Forum, on Friday, April 4 (9 a.m.-noon, Reiman Gardens). Local artists, arts and civic leaders and community members will discuss opportunities for strengthening arts and culture in their region and across the state. The forums are free and open to the public, and registration is highly encouraged. Register online in advance and select the Ames location.

Inter-Residence Hall Association collects accolades at regional meeting

The Inter-Residence Hall Association received several honors at the recent regional business conference of the Midwest Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls, held at the University of Nebraska, Kearney:

  • Iowa State received the School of the Year award, the highest honor member schools can receive, in recognition of outstanding achievements on the campus level by a residence hall organization and affiliated groups, as well as contributions on regional and national levels. IRHA qualifies for the National School of the Year award at the National Association of College and University Residence Halls conference in May.
  • IRHA board members Braden Fels, Chase Davis and Julia Pedroza won first place in the case study competition, in which representatives have to collaborate and find solutions to common scenarios present in hall government spaces.
  • IRHA president Braden Fels was elected as the regional director of the Midwest Affiliate for the 2025-26 year, and Martin Hall director Casey Dworzynski was confirmed as the regional advisor.

Register by March 20 for gardens' Day of Insects

Reiman Gardens invites nature lovers, entomology enthusiasts and families to experience the incredible world of insects at its 17th annual Day of Insects on Saturday, March 29 (8 a.m.-4:20 p.m.). Registration ($24; $38 with box lunch) is required and the deadline is March 20. Enjoy a full schedule of engaging presentations and hands-on activities, with experts sharing their knowledge on topics such as mosquito factories, insect conservation, honeybee behavior and more.

Ames' snow ordinance takes effect at 11 p.m. Thursday

The city of Ames' snow ordinance will go into effect at 11 p.m. Thursday, March 6, and remain in effect until 8 a.m. Saturday, March 8 -- but may vary depending on plowing conditions. Crews most likely will make multiple passes on streets Friday until the snow stops falling. Vehicles on city snow routes (identified by red and white signs) should be moved to off-street parking or to streets not designated as snow routes. To assist with the plowing effort, owners are asked to not park vehicles on any residential street, particularly on circles and cul de sacs; however, only vehicles parked on snow routes risk being towed.

With warmer temperatures anticipated next week, the snow is expected to melt rapidly. Residents can help prevent street ponding and overnight refreezing by making sure storm sewer intakes near their property remain clear of snow, slush and brush.

Daylight saving time starts March 9

Daylight saving time returns at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 9, providing light later in the evening and less light in the morning. Adjust clocks forward one hour before retiring on Saturday night.

Wednesday update: Classes move online, campus partially closed

Due to the forecast for blizzard conditions, Iowa State will partially close and classes (day and evening) will meet virtually on Wednesday, March 5. Students should check email and Canvas for additional information from their instructors. All academic buildings will be locked; those who need access should contact the ISU Department of Public Safety, 515-294-4428. Parks Library, the Memorial Union and Rec Services facilities will be closed. Classes will resume in-person instruction on Thursday, March 6. Updates will be posted on the ISU Alert website.

Supervisors should provide maximum flexibility for their employees to work remotely or take leave. If remote work is not an option, consider training opportunities that employees can complete remotely. During a partial closure, the university will maintain the following services: police/public safety, power plant, residence halls, food service, health care, animal care and critical maintenance, including ongoing research projects.

Grad Mixer Wednesdays partners with colleges this spring

Grad Mixer Wednesdays is collaborating with a different college each Wednesday of March and part of April to address important topics for graduate students. Ivy College of Business is hosting "Growing Your Professional Skillset" on March 5 (1-4:30 p.m., 4237 Student Innovation Center) with topics such as building your brand and the student perspective on academic versus industry job seeking. The College of Engineering will host "Engineering the Future: Innovation, Collaboration and the AI Revolution" on March 12, and the College of Health and Human Sciences will discuss "Shaping the Future: Advancing Research, Teaching and Funding" on March 26.

Presenters sought for women's and gender studies student conference in April

Iowa State's Women's and Gender Studies student conference will be held Saturday, April 12 (9 a.m.-4 p.m., Student Innovation Center). Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to attend and/or present their research as it relates to themes within the fields of gender, sexuality and women's studies. Proposals are due by 11:59 p.m. March 28. This conference is free to attend. March 29 workshop targets would-be business owners

The Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship, with the Ames Regional Economic Alliance and Iowa Small Business Development Center, will host a free Smart Start Workshop on Saturday, March 29 (9 a.m.-4 p.m., ISU Research Park Core Facility). The day is a "crash course" for anyone considering starting a business. Local business professionals will cover topics such as banking basics, insurance, business organization, intellectual property, registration, marketing and operations. Registration is required; half-day registration is available.

Juniors, seniors: Apply by March 28 for undergraduate research assistantship

The office of student financial aid is accepting applications for the 2025-26 undergraduate research assistantship (URA) program. The program encourages outstanding juniors and seniors to pursue graduate study by offering hands-on experience in a formal research environment to help them make career decisions and learn more about graduate education and fellowships.   • Be classified as juniors or seniors by the beginning of the research term
  • File the 2025-26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be eligible for work-study funding
  • Maintain an ISU cumulative GPA of at least 3.25
  • Complete the online URA application (soft deadline of March 28 for spring interviews)

Signal work starts Feb. 24 at intersection south of football stadium

Ahead of a two-summer project to widen South 16th Street near the Veterinary Medicine campus, the city of Ames will replace the traffic signals at the road's intersection with University Boulevard, south of Jack Trice Stadium. On Monday, Feb. 24, crews are scheduled to start work at the site on underground preparation and installation of the traffic pole foundations. Depending on weather, the work will take 1-2 weeks. During this time, University Boulevard will remain open; however, there may be temporary lane closures and periods where the intersection functions like a four-way stop with flashing red signals. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to stay alert to these temporary adjustments.

Registration is open for digital scholarship symposium

Registration has opened for the second annual Digital Scholarship Symposium on Wednesday, March 26 (9:45 a.m.-4 p.m., 199 Parks). The symposium will feature two panel discussions: "Public Digital Arts and Humanities: Community Impact Through Digital Projects" and "Digital Pedagogy: Expanding Digital Literacy and Creativity in the Classroom." Panelists will discuss examples of using digital methods to open research to a wider audience and developing digital literacy skills in the classroom. Registration is free and includes lunch.

Landscape Club offering design sessions on March 1

Landscape Club members will offer one-hour landscaping design sessions for homeowners on Saturday, March 1 (9 a.m-2 p.m., four time slots, Horticulture Hall) on a first-come, first-served basis for $150. Sign up. Club members will provide a basic site overview, plant recommendations and a physical design for homeowners to take home that day. Proceeds support club members at the 2025 National Collegiate Landscape Competition.

Due to the forecast for extremely cold weather on Tuesday, Feb. 18, Iowa State's morning classes (those starting prior to 11:30 a.m.) will meet virtually. Documentary, Q&A shine a light on eating disorders

As part of national Eating Disorders Week, Student Counseling Services will host a Q&A panel and screening of the 34-minute documentary, "Behind the Before and After: Intuitive Eating and Body Image" on Tuesday, Feb. 25 (6:30 p.m., MU Great Hall).

Wednesday evening classes will meet virtually

Due to the deteriorating weather conditions, evening classes at Iowa State will meet virtually, beginning at 4:50 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12. Students should check email and Canvas for additional information from their instructors. The expectation is that classes will resume for in-person instruction on Thursday, Feb 13. Students who feel they can't make it to campus safely are reminded to contact their instructor to arrange to make up work. Updates will be posted at www.isualert.iastate.edu/.

The Iowa State campus remains open. Supervisors should provide maximum flexibility for employees to work remotely or take leave. If remote work is not an option, consider potential training opportunities that employees can complete remotely.

Supervisors in police, public safety, security, power plant, food service, health care, animal care and critical maintenance should make arrangements for team members to report safely to campus. Employees who cannot make it to campus should contact their supervisors.

Fall juniors could be eligible for Carver renewable scholarship

Twenty Iowa State students are selected annually to receive a renewable $6,000 scholarship from the Roy J. Carver Trust. The application deadline for fall 2025 recipients is April 1, and the eligibility criteria are:

  • At least a junior classification by fall 2025
  • Evidence of significant social and economic obstacles to attending college full time
  • Graduate of accredited Iowa high school or Iowa resident for five years
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.80
  • Demonstrates financial need based on the FAFSA (student must file FAFSA for 2025-26 year)

Vet Med students earn innovation award

Iowa State's student chapter of the Veterinary Business Management Association received the "Most Innovative Award" at the association's recent national meeting in Dallas. The Iowa State students were selected for their "Paws on Practice Ownership" events, in which College of Veterinary Medicine students visit local veterinary clinics to learn more about practice ownership as a veterinarian and observe various clinic layouts and designs. The chapter implemented its visits program in 2023.

No kidding; ice cream sale resumes today

For the first time this semester, members of the Dairy Science Club are selling ice cream today (11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) outside the north doors to Lush Auditorium in Kildee Hall. Get a cup for $2 (cash only); flavors this week are chocolate, Oreo, Butterfinger, KitKat and thin mint. The ice cream is mixed by club members at the ISU Creamery, and the sale serves as a fundraiser for club activities throughout the year. Interested in having the club's ice cream for your event? Send an email.

Individual tickets on sale for August football game in Ireland

Individual tickets (with no travel package) for the Iowa State versus Kansas State College Football Classic in Dublin, Ireland (Aug. 23, Avia Stadium) went on sale via Ticketmaster on Feb. 5. Tickets will be sold through Feb. 28 or while supplies last. (Secondary ticket markets are prohibited for events in Ireland, so don't rely on this option this summer.)

Entrees requested for student exhibit at MU

The Memorial Union requests Iowa State student artwork, poetry and apparel design for an upcoming exhibit. The show is open to current students of any major, and they can submit up to three entries for consideration for an exhibition that will be presented in the Memorial Union Art Gallery (Feb. 16-March 12). Matthew Olds, an award winning Seattle artist, will judge visual work, and poetry will be juried by Mexican-American writer and poet Leah Huizar. The deadline for online submissions is Monday, Feb. 3, at 10 a.m. 

Mushroom certification class offered this spring

ISU Extension and Outreach's Wild-harvested Mushroom Certification Class will return this spring. The class, led by plant disease diagnostician Chelsea Harbach, includes an online lecture (via Zoom) and a mandatory in-person workshop (where the certification exam occurs) offered three times: March 15, March 29 and April 12, all in Ames. Participants receive the link for the Zoom lecture when they register for a workshop. The class costs $60 and is particularly relevant for those hoping to sell wild-harvested mushrooms, since sellers in Iowa are required to complete a certification workshop to sell eight varieties of wild-harvested mushrooms.

Business attire pop-up shop announces early February hours

Iowa State's free Business Attire Pop-Up Shop, which has a permanent space in the east Memorial Union, will be open to all ISU students in advance of the spring career fairs, which begin Feb. 11. The closet is located in the Multicultural Center on the second level. Students may come in to browse for suitable clothing and accessories during these Pop-Up Shop hours:

Feb. 4 fair emphasizes consent in relationships

ISU's Green Zone team invites students, staff and faculty to stop by the Green Zone Fun Fair on Tuesday, Feb. 4 (10 a.m.-2 p.m., Great Hall, Memorial Union). Grab a snack, play a game and win some prizes. Nominate an individual or team for a sustainability excellence award

Student club taking orders through Jan. 31 for Valentine fudge

Members of the Food Science Club are making and selling fudge by online preorder in time for Valentine's Day. The group will accept preorders for 250 pounds of fudge through Friday, Jan. 31, or until it has sold out. This year's six flavors are: chocolate, peanut butter, cookies 'n cream, chocolate mint, orange cream and Cardinal & Gold (formerly Cyclone: chocolate fudge with peanuts and mini marshmallows, topped with Cyclone M&Ms). Prices for a half-pound container are: $7 each, two for $12, $6 for each container after two. Orders can be picked up on Tuesday-Wednesday, Feb. 11-12 (10 a.m.-3 p.m. daily, 206 MacKay). Any extra fudge will be sold on Thursday, Feb. 13 (10 a.m.-1 p.m., same location). Proceeds will help cover club expenses and industry trips.

Athletics offers ticket special for Oklahoma State dual

Iowa State wrestling fans can purchase a four pack of general admission tickets to the Jan. 26 dual against conference foe Oklahoma State (4 p.m., Hilton Coliseum) for $25. The Cyclones ask all fans to wear cardinal colors, and the first 200 fans entering Hilton receive a wrestling T-shirt.

Iowa State Singers perform Friday in Beardshear rotunda

Join the Iowa State Singers for a concert of 10 Renaissance madrigals on Friday, Jan. 24 (7:30 p.m., second level of Beardshear Hall, enter at the south doors). This informal event, which evolved when the music and theatre department ended its Madrigal Dinner tradition during the pandemic, provides the student vocalists an opportunity to perform in small chamber groups, which are led by student leaders. The students will sing in the rotunda area on the second level; audience members are welcome to join them there. The concert is free and short -- about 30 minutes -- and seating isn't provided (pack a folding chair if you'd like).

Study Abroad Fair is Jan. 30

The Study Abroad Center will host its next Study Abroad Fair on Thursday, Jan. 30 (10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., MU Great Hall). Matt Mathews stand-up comedy show stops at Stephens

Recycle holiday or unused cards through Jan. 15

As in past years, the Office of Sustainability and ISU Recycling Services will partner to collect the fronts from used holiday cards (and any greeting cards), as well as any new, unused cards with or without envelopes to support St. Jude's Ranch for Children's recycled card program. Please note: The program can't accept Hallmark, Disney or American Greetings products. A collection box will be available Dec. 23-Jan. 15 near the key desk in General Services Building. Art museums closing for winter exhibition changes

University museums' Brunnier Art Museum, Farm House Museum and Christian Petersen Art Museum all are closed for exhibition changes from Dec. 23 through Jan. 20, 2025 (the Petersen museum in Morrill Hall will close at 2 p.m. on Dec. 20). Public hours at each museum will resume Jan. 21, the first day of spring semester.

Register for laboratory safety workshop in January

Environmental Health and Safety will host an in-person workshop on Jan. 8, 10, 14 and 16 for on-campus laboratory workers, including faculty, staff and students (graduate and undergraduate). Participants receive hands-on experience on topics such as hazardous waste disposal, chemical storage and spill cleanup; and a Regulated Materials Facility tour. Before attending, learners must complete the Safety Data Sheets online training (30 minutes).

Donate a used musical instrument at Stephens Auditorium

Through Dec. 23, Stephens Auditorium staff are hosting a used musical instrument drive to benefit the students in band/music programs at area schools. Instruments that can be hand carried (no pianos, please) can be brought to Stephens during December shows or during Stephens ticket office hours (11 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday). Instruments requiring minor repair or parts replacement are acceptable. Two-day GIS course offered Jan. 16-17

Staff in ISU Extension and Outreach's community and economic development unit are hosting a two-day course on a geographic information system (GIS), Essentials of ArcGIS Pro, Jan. 16-17, 2025 (8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. daily, Economic Development Core Facility, ISU Research Park). New and experienced GIS users are welcome. Participants will explore the new features in Esri's ArcGIS Pro software suite and learn about making maps with geospatial data, mapping data from tables, querying datasets and displaying, projecting and editing data. The price is $600/person ($300 for ISU staff, students and faculty). Gardens' light show opens with toy drive

Tickets are on sale for Reiman Gardens' Winter Wonderscape and must be purchased online in advance. The holiday light show happens Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings (5-9 p.m.) Dec. 5-28, plus Monday, Dec. 23. Tickets, $16 ($14 for member adults and ISU students; $7 for youth 2-12 years) are sold in half-hour time increments from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Once guests enter during their ticketed time slot, they may stay as long as they wish (the gardens close at 9 p.m. during this event). Weather permitting, s'mores kits can be purchased (and used) near the Hunziker House. 

The Dec. 5 opener will include a toy drive (5:30-8:30 p.m.) to benefit Boys and Girls Clubs of Story County, Ames (Wonderscape ticket required). Bring a new unwrapped toy and meet members of the Cyclone women's basketball team (two groups of four student athletes will be present for 90 minutes each to accept toys ).

Horticulture club selling poinsettias this week

The horticulture club is selling poinsettias as a fundraiser to cover club activities, traveling expenses and student enrichment. Club members grew the plants in the horticulture greenhouses. Pot sizes are 4, 6 and 10 inches; prices vary from $12 to $40. Plants may be purchased (and pre-orders picked up) this week at these campus locations:

Room scheduling will reserve these 10 general university classrooms for students to use as study rooms during prep week, Dec. 9-13 (5:30-11 p.m. daily):

In addition, university museums will offer extended hours at the Christian Petersen Art Museum in Morrill Hall on Thursday, Dec. 12 (5-9 p.m.) with relaxing activities and a quiet place to study.

Art Mart holiday sale is Dec. 3-6

Pottery, blown glass, jewelry, decor, paintings and accessories created by campus artists will be sold at the annual Art Mart Tuesday-Friday, Dec. 3-6 in the Art Gallery, first floor of the Memorial Union. Hours are:

  • Dec. 3, 4-7 p.m.
  • Dec. 4, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Dec. 5, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Dec. 6 (Winterfest), 11 a.m.-9 p.m.

Maker mart at Innovate 1858 is Dec. 4

Innovate 1858, a student-run store in the Student Innovation Center that carries only products created by ISU students and alumni, is hosting a Maker Market on Wednesday, Dec. 4 (4-6 p.m.). It will feature a range of products from both alumni and current students. Meet a few of the makers and enjoy activities such as pictures with Elsa and Anna, raffle prizes, winter-themed crafts and more.
