The Ames International Orchestra Festival Association is bringing the Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine to Ames for a Friday, March 3, concert (7:30 p.m., Stephens Auditorium), the final stop on its U.S. tour. Tickets, $35-$80, are available via Ticketmaster. As part of the tour, the orchestra played New York City's Carnegie Hall and Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts earlier this month. 

'Ask Me Anything' panel looks at neurodiversity

The division of student affairs' Diversity and Inclusion Committee continues its series of Ask Me Anything panels with "Neurodiversity from Neurodiverse Perspectives" on Wednesday, March 8 (10:30-11:30 a.m. via Zoom). As described in a recent Inside story, neurodiversity acknowledges that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways. There is no one "right" way of thinking, learning and behaving, and these differences should not be viewed as deficits. Voices will include students, staff and faculty from across the university. Registration is encouraged, and questions can be submitted online.

Boxers compete Saturday on campus

Iowa State's Boxing Club is hosting the "Cyclone Throwdown" Saturday, Feb. 25 (2-5 p.m., doors open at 1:30 p.m., southwest courts, State Gym). There will be a single ring with spectator seating. Admission is $10 (students $5) at the door. Other clubs competing represent the universities of Wisconsin (Madison), Illinois (Chicago and Urbana-Champaign campuses) and Iowa, and Marquette University, Milwaukee. Each bout lasts up to three rounds.

Spring child care scholarships still available for undergraduate student parents

The office of Child Care and Family Services at Iowa State is accepting applications for the undergraduate Childcare Assistance Program (CAP). This scholarship program is available to undergraduate student parents attending Iowa State to assist with out-of-pocket costs for child care services. Eligible student parents may receive up to $1,250 per semester. Funds are still available for spring semester, and students with the highest financial need will receive priority consideration. Full eligibility guidelines and application instructions are on the Child Care & Family Services website. Email questions to ccfamily@iastate.edu.

March 1 is application deadline for campus undergrad research symposium

Undergraduate students who do mentored research in a campus lab are invited to present their research project in a conference-style oral presentation at ISU's 17th Annual Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression on Thursday, April 20, at the Student Innovation Center. The application deadline is March 1. All undergraduate students from all academic disciplines involved in mentored research are eligible to participate, and applications are welcome from individuals or small groups. Information about the symposium, including the application for prospective participants, is online. Scholarship available to fall juniors

Twenty ISU students are selected each year for a renewable $6,000 scholarship from the Roy J. Carver Trust, Muscatine. This spring's applicants must be Iowa residents with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.80 who will be junior-level in fall 2023 and have faced significant social and economic obstacles to being a fulltime college student. Applicants must have a FAFSA on file for the 2023-24 academic year with a demonstrated need. Be a team leader at Destination Iowa State

New student programs staff are recruiting returning students to serve as team leaders during Destination Iowa State, Aug. 17-19. Each team leader mentors and leads a group of up to 20 students through the DIS experience. Leaders attend two leadership development workshops and complete a course in Canvas this spring. Bookstore hosts Pete the Cat Saturday morning

The University Book Store is hosting a storytime with children's book character Pete the Cat Saturday, Feb. 11 (10:30-11:15 a.m., bookstore, Memorial Union). As part of the event, Pete the Cat books will be buy one, save 50% on the second, and themed plush toys will be $5 off.

City's snow ordinance takes effect Wednesday night

The city of Ames' snow ordinance will go into effect at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, and remain in effect until it has stopped snowing and the streets are plowed curb to curb. The snow ordinance likely will remain in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, but could vary throughout the community due to plowing challenges. Vehicles on city snow routes (identified by red and white signs) should be moved to off-street parking or to streets not designated as snow routes. To assist with the plowing effort, owners are asked to not park vehicles on any residential street, particularly on circles and cul de sacs; however, only vehicles parked on snow routes risk being towed.

Next Goldfinch Room concert is Feb. 28

Iowa singer/songwriters J. Jeffrey Messerole and Sara Routh will combine their talents for a Tuesday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m. concert on the Goldfinch Room stage at Stephens Auditorium. Tables that seat up to four cost $40, and a limited number of general admission seats are $15; purchase tickets online. Concessions will be available, too.

English conversation leaders sought for spring semester

Staff in the international students and scholars office (ISSO) are recruiting volunteer English conversation leaders for English Together: Daily English Conversations this semester. The program is intended to help international students and scholars practice their English skills through conversation, games and topics of interest. ISSO provides all guidance and weekly resources to lead the sessions. An information meeting for faculty, staff or students interested in being a conversation leader will be held Thursday, Feb. 9 (4-5 p.m., 0034 Parks Library).

Town & Gown Musicale tickets on sale now

The Ames Town & Gown Chamber Music Association's annual Musicale will be held Saturday, Feb. 18 (7 p.m., St. John's by the Campus Episcopal Church, 2338 Lincoln Way). Tickets, $50 (students $15) may be purchased online or at the door, and include a post-performance reception with hors d'oeuvres and desserts. Numerous Iowa State faculty and students will perform.

ISCORE registration is open

Registration opened Feb. 1 for the the 23nd annual Thomas L. Hill Iowa State Conference on Race and Ethnicity (ISCORE) on Friday, March 3. ISCORE is the university's comprehensive forum on issues of race and ethnicity and provides an ongoing platform of sharing and applying knowledge through presentations and workshops. It's free and open to all faculty, staff and students. A preconference for faculty, staff and graduate students will be held Wednesday, March 1 (10:30 a.m.-4 p.m.).

Horticulture club hosts Valentine's bouquet sale

Members of the horticulture club are selling rose, carnation and a few featured flower bouquets Feb. 13-14 (9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily, east foyer of Union Drive Community Center). Pre-orders (custom or pre-designed) will be taken through 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, or walk up to purchase flowers on those days. Bouquet prices range from $15 to $65. Cash, check and credit cards are accepte payment. Proceeds support the club's travel.

Undergraduate 'research in the capitol' applications due Feb. 6

The annual Research in the Capitol, featuring undergraduate research at Iowa's three regent universities, will be held Monday, March 6. Faculty or staff mentoring undergraduate researchers should encourage them to complete the RIC abstract form by Feb. 6. Applications may be submitted by individuals or small groups. Iowa State sends 15 research projects to the event, where undergraduates display posters and describe their research to legislators, reporters and university administrators, serving as ambassadors to convey the depth and variety of research on campus. Submissions are evaluated by topic, relevance to legislative interests and geographic representation. Students or their research mentors may contact Svitlana Zbarska, undergraduate research program coordinator, for more information.

Food pantry wants your egg cartons and grocery bags

SHOP, the student-serving food pantry on campus, is in need of empty egg cartons (cardboard or styrofoam) and plastic grocery bags. They can be dropped off in 1306 Beyer during open hours: 1-6 p.m. Monday, 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, 2-7 p.m. Wednesday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday.

Celebrate Black History Month

February is Black History Month, an annual observance of Black history, culture and achievements. Black History Month began in this country in 1926 as Negro History Week and evolved into a month-long celebration in the 1960s, before being officially acknowledged in 1976. Ames is an overnight stop on July's RAGBRAI route

Bicyclists participating in the 50th-anniversary RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa) will stay overnight in Ames on Tuesday, July 25, the third night of the ride. They'll be arriving from Carroll and heading to Des Moines. The Discover Ames organization is leading the local planning effort, with support from the city, Iowa State University, chamber of commerce, Story County and others. More details about the route, entertainment and food options, and volunteer opportunities will be shared as they become available. Ames previously served as an overnight stop on the route in 2018, 2008, 1983 and the inaugural route in 1973.

Apply to the McNair program to be better prepared for graduate school

Students approaching junior status interested in Ph.D. studies who are first-generation, meet low-income guidelines or are a member of an underrepresented group in graduate education are encouraged to investigate the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program. During their junior and seniors years, the program prepares participants for graduate school through mentored research, assistance choosing and applying to graduate schools and personal and professional development. Apply for fall undergraduate research program

The office of student financial aid is accepting applications from faculty, staff and students for the 2023-24 Undergraduate Research Assistantship program, which provides outstanding juniors and seniors hands-on experience in a formal research environment. A soft March 24 deadline assures interviews this spring. Faculty applicants will interview student(s) and make offers of employment and complete letter(s) of intent. Student candidates must have filled out the 2023-24 FAFSA financial aid form and be eligible for work-study funding. Preference is given to students and faculty/staff who request to work with each other. More information, including program guidelines, funding sources and application documents, is online. Qualtrics library is being updated

Iowa State Qualtrics users can anticipate an update to the Qualtrics library interface beginning as early as Feb. 1. Qualtrics is the web-based survey application available to faculty, staff and students. The library navigation pane will move to the left side. Also, separate library silos for surveys, graphics, files and messages will merge into one library space. As a result, folders can be better organized and filtered. Because all uncategorized items will move into one folder, now is a good time to organize those items. Learn more about this update in the IT Service portal.

Student proposals sought for April conference on women, gender and sexuality studies

The women's and gender studies program is accepting presentation proposals through March 20 for its spring student conference on Saturday, April 15 (9 a.m.-4 p.m., Student Innovation Center). Any undergraduate or graduate student attending a college or university in Iowa is welcome to submit a proposal. Projects can be research-based, creative projects, activist work, pedagogy-related or other thematic work related to gender, sexuality, identity or feminism. Spring titles posted for Cyclone Cinema

Cyclone Cinema, sponsored by the Student Union Board, has announced the 13 2022 feature films in its spring lineup. Each film has four showings (7 p.m. Thursday-Sunday, 101 Carver). The Sunday showing includes captioning. Films are free and the public is welcome; concessions (soda, water, popcorn, candy) are available for $1-$2.

MU poster sale runs Jan. 23-27

The Memorial Union's winter poster sale is set for Jan. 23-27 (10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily, Campanile Room). Browse hundreds of choices from classic posters to fresh off-the-press artist prints. Most posters are priced between $8 and $15. Proceeds directly support MU art exhibit programs.

Order Valentine fudge from food science club by Jan. 27

Members of the Food Science Club are taking preorders on fudge for Valentine's Day through Friday, Jan. 27, or until sold out (club members will prepare and package up to 250 pounds of fudge). This year's flavor options are: chocolate, peanut butter, cookies 'n cream, chocolate mint and Cyclone (chocolate fudge with peanuts and mini marshmallows, topped with Cyclone M&Ms). Pricing for the half-pound containers is: $7 for one, $12 for two, and $6 for each additional. Place orders online, and pick them up Thursday-Friday, Feb. 9-10 (10 a.m.-3 p.m. daily, outside 206 MacKay). FIRST LEGO League state championship seeks volunteers

Volunteers are needed when the College of Engineering hosts the FIRST LEGO League state championship tournament Saturday, Jan. 28, for more than 600 students in grades 4-8. Every opportunity, from check-in helper to robot game referee, judge to photographer, are adults who believe in the mission of FIRST. Volunteers receive a T-shirt, refreshments and training specific to your assigned job (either the morning of the event or in advance online). Sign up online. Registration starts Jan. 24 for 'Ready to Run Iowa' training series for women

Registration opens Jan. 24 for the first two workshops (on Friday, Feb. 24) in the 2023 "Ready to Run® Iowa" campaign training series for women. Ready to Run Iowa is a nonpartisan campaign training program to encourage women to run for elective office, position themselves for appointive office, work on a campaign or become more involved in public life. The other workshops in the series will be offered on Fridays in March and April. More information is available from the Catt Center, which offers the program every other year as part of a national network.

Art rental is Jan. 18-20 at the Memorial Union

The Memorial Union is hosting an Art for Rent public open house Jan. 18 (4-6 p.m.), Jan. 19 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) and Jan. 20 (10 a.m.-noon) in the MU art gallery on the first floor. The collection includes about 275 framed posters, prints and paintings that may be rented for a half or full year, for office or home. Rentals typically range from $10 to $25 per year. Patrons may view the collection and take selected pieces with them during the open house. Cash, credit and departmental charges are accepted. Proceeds from rentals support art programs at the MU.

Save the date: Carver celebration is Feb. 1

The state's first observance of George Washington Carver Day, in honor of Iowa State's first Black alumnus and faculty member, is coming up on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The university community is invited to a campus program and celebration in the Memorial Union Great Hall (5-7 p.m.) that also will be livestreamed. It opens with a reception featuring foods inspired by the food scientist and will include remarks from current leaders of the schools and agencies where Carver spent time. It will conclude with free ice cream from the ISU Creamery. To assist with planning, RSVPs are requested by Jan. 25.

Last summer, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law Senate File 2380, which designates Feb. 1 (the beginning of Black History Month) each year as George Washington Carver Day in Iowa.

Students can learn about interning or studying abroad during experiences ranging from one week to one year. And anyone from the Iowa State community may apply for a U.S. passport during the fair. ISU Dining announces new director

Christian Wise joined the Campus Life community Jan. 4 as the director of ISU Dining. He oversees the operations of a campus dining system that includes three residential dining centers; multiple cafés, convenience stores, restaurants and get-and-go locations; food court; catering and a central production bakery. He succeeds Mohamed Ali, who left the university in March. Karen Rodekamp and Stuart Essex served as co-interim directors.

Ukrainian orchestra will perform at Stephens March 3

The Ames International Orchestra Festival Association announces that the Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine will play Stephens Auditorium on Friday, March 3, 2023. Oksana Rapita, one of Ukraine's most prominent pianists, will perform with the orchestra. Concert tickets go on sale to the general public at noon Tuesday, Dec. 20. As part of this tour, the orchestra also will play New York City's Carnegie Hall and Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. 

Recycle greeting card fronts

Through Jan. 15, recycling services and the office of sustainability will collect greeting cards for reuse in the St. Jude's Ranch for Children's recycled card program. Greeting cards for any occasion can be donated; only the card fronts are needed (recycle the backs). Cards can be donated two ways -- drop them in collection boxes in the General Services Building (first floor, by the key/information desk) or send them in campus mail to Steve Kohtz (152 General Services Building) or Merry Rankin (108 General Services). Due to copyright restrictions, this program is not able to use cards from American Greetings, Disney or Hallmark.

Holiday show in the Goldfinch Room is Dec. 18

The Goldfinch Room Iowa artists concert series at Stephens Auditorium will hold its first holiday show on Sunday, Dec. 18 (5 p.m., Goldfinch listening room). Central Standard Time, a singer/songwriter duo of Matt Hibbard and Charlie Rod from Iowa City, will be joined by cellist Patrick McAlpine for an evening of Christmas hymns and carols. Guests can reserve a table for up to four for $40. A limited number of general admission seats will be available for $15. Concessions will be sold as well. In a partnership with KHOI Community Radio, the performance will broadcast live at 89.1 FM, a first for the Goldfinch Room series.

ISU police fundraiser to benefit SHOP

Art sale continues through Dec. 9

The College of Design Art Club's fall sale continues Thursday-Friday, Dec. 8-9 (10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily) in the Design building's central foyer. Most items for sale are ceramics but may include prints, photos, wood, jewelry and textiles created by undergraduate and graduate students in the college. A majority of proceeds go to the artists and the rest help fund club activities.

Reminder: Complete regents' free speech training

The state Board of Regents expects all students and employees to complete virtual training about free speech and the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution by the end of spring semester. In about 20 minutes, the training emphasizes the importance of how to both use speech and expression in classroom and out-of-class activities and respect the protected speech and activity of others. Beginning last year, Iowa's three regent universities are required to provide free speech training annually.

Rec services opens gender-neutral restroom at Lied center

Recreation services has completed a remodeling project to open a gender-neutral restroom on the first floor of the Lied Recreation Athletic Center for building users who are nonbinary or feel more comfortable in a gender-neutral space. With the new restroom, rec services provides gender-neutral restrooms in its three indoor facilities. The others are a restroom on Beyer Hall first floor between the men's and women's locker rooms and two changing rooms with showers near the pool at State Gym. Rec services' policy allows patrons to use any facility or space, including locker rooms and restrooms, consistent with their gender identity.

Honors program's fall poster presentations, convocation are Dec. 7

The University Honors program invites the campus community to its fall poster presentation, featuring Honors capstone projects, on Wednesday, Dec. 7 (3-5 p.m., MU Great Hall). Fall 2022 Honors graduates and other Honors students will answer questions and speak with individuals interested in their projects. The Honors fall convocation will follow at 5:45 p.m. in the MU Sun Room, preceded by a reception (5-5:45 p.m.).

Two more weekends to shop at forestry club tree and wreath sale

Forestry club members will sell Christmas trees and wreaths Dec 2-4 and Dec. 9-11 in the Reiman Gardens parking lot. Select from Korean ($70-$80), Balsam ($80-$100) and Canaan ($70-$80) fir and white pine ($60) trees. Wreaths come in two sizes, 25-inch ($25) and 30-inch ($30). Sale hours are Fridays 3-6 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sundays 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Payment is by cash or check. Questions may be directed to jmerry@iastate.edu.

Poinsettia sale runs Nov. 30-Dec. 3

The horticulture club is selling poinsettias as a fundraiser to cover club activities, traveling expenses and student enrichment. Club members grew the plants in the horticulture greenhouses. Pot sizes are 4.5, 6 and 10 inches; prices vary from $10 to $40. Plants may be purchased (and pre-orders picked up) this week at these campus locations:
