Reiman Gardens' plant sale is May 13-14
Reiman Gardens' annual plant sale opens to the public on Saturday-Sunday, May 13 (9 a.m.-6 p.m.) and May 14 (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) in the gardens' parking lot, rain or shine. Plants for sale include perennials for sun and shade; herbs and vegetables; Iowa natives; woody plants including trees, shrubs and Buck roses; specialty evergreens; container annuals; hanging baskets; All-American Selection vegetables and herbs; and prefinished mixed containers. Credit card, check and cash are accepted as payment. No gardens admission is required to shop at the sale. Garden members can enjoy shopping hours on Friday, May 12 (4-7 p.m.).
All purchases support the participating units: ecology, evolution and organismal biology graduate student organization, graduate student horticulture society, ISU horticulture club, Reiman Gardens and the Story County Master Gardener Association.
Cyclone May 'tailgate tour' dates announced
The athletics department and Cyclone Club have shared their two 2023 Tailgate Tour itineraries. The west tour (May 15-17) includes daily noon and evening stops in Paton, Council Bluffs, Sioux City, Okoboji, Webster City and Clear Lake. The east tour (May 22-24) includes two stops each day in Marshalltown, Waterloo, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Bettendorf and Des Moines. At these free events, fans can interact with Cy, Cyclone head coaches Matt Campbell, T.J. Otzelberger, Bill Fennelly, Christy Johnson-Lynch and Kevin Dresser; athletics director Jamie Pollard and voice of the Cyclones John Walters.
Entrepreneurial visionary John Pappajohn has died
John Pappajohn, whose 1996 gift established entrepreneurial centers at all three Iowa regent universities, Drake University and North Iowa Area Community College, died April 22 in Naples, Florida. Iowa State's Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship opened on a vision of providing students of all majors a variety of entrepreneurial opportunities. Today, it offers programming for students, faculty, community entrepreneurs, business professionals and alumni with the objective of creating a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation to build and improve Iowa businesses.
Judi Eyles, director of Iowa State's Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship, said in a statement, "We are deeply saddened to learn of John's passing. John Pappajohn was a true visionary and his support of entrepreneurship at Iowa State will have a lasting impact. He was a kind and generous man, and he loved spending time with students and entrepreneurs.
"John was an inspiring and positive role model who taught our young entrepreneurs to be successful through his hard work, generosity and mantra that -- 'If I can do it, you can do it.' We are fortunate that he had the vision to change the landscape for entrepreneurs in Iowa and was always willing to support them, and the Iowa State Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship, not only financially, but with his advice and wisdom."

April 29-30 is stash-your-trash weekend, but there's more
The annual Stash the Trash community beautification started April 17 and runs through May 6. Clean-up supplies (bags and gloves) are available for pick-up from the Ames Community Center at city hall or the Resource Recovery Plant, 420 E. 2nd St. Individuals, families and groups can choose a place to beautify and a time to pick up trash at their convenience. A roll-off container will be available April 29-30 in stadium parking lot S3, near Reiman Gardens, to stash collected trash. May 4 meeting for interested summer rummage sale volunteers
The annual city-university Rummage Rampage, focused on diverting usable household items from a landfill, will be held July 28-Aug. 5 at the Ames Intermodal Facility on Hayward Avenue. ISU student organizations and community non-profits interested in volunteering at least 10 hours at this year's event to receive a percentage of event proceeds should attend an informational meeting on Thursday, May 4 (6 p.m., Ames Water Treatment Plant, 1800 East 13th St.). University Honors spring poster presentation is May 3
The University Honors program invites the campus community to its spring poster presentation, featuring Honors capstone projects, on Wednesday, May 3 (3-5 p.m., MU Great Hall). Spring Honors graduates and other Honors students will answer questions and speak with individuals interested in their projects. The Honors program's spring convocation will follow at 5:45 p.m. in the MU Sun Room, preceded by a reception (5-5:45 p.m.).

Cyclones reveal throwback football uniforms for fall legacy game
During the spring football game April 22, the Cyclone football program revealed the throwback uniforms team members will wear for the Jack Trice Legacy Game on Oct. 7. The jersey honors those worn by Jack Trice during the 1923 season.
Funeral Mass for MU director Steve Winfrey is April 28
Steve Winfrey, director of the Memorial Union since August 2017, died April 19 in Ames of pancreatic cancer. A visitation will be held Thursday, April 27 (6-8 p.m., Durham Great Hall, MU), with a vigil service at 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held Friday, April 28 (3 p.m., St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 2900 Hoover Ave.), preceded by an hour of visitation (2-3 p.m.). Regents approve promotions for 75 faculty
Meeting April 20 in Ames, the state Board of Regents approved promotion and tenure requests for 75 Iowa State faculty, effective for the 2023-24 academic year. The group includes 43 cases of promotion with tenure, three tenure-only cases and 29 promotions for tenured faculty.
Annual Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression is April 20
The university community is invited to the 17th annual, day-long Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression Thursday, April 20 (8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m., poster session 3-5 p.m., Student Innovation Center). Nearly 190 undergraduates from all academic disciplines will share 142 individual and group research projects through oral and poster presentations. A symposium program provides an overview. United Way food drive runs April 24-May 4
United Way of Story County's 2023 Live United food drive runs April 24-May 4 and includes more than two dozen campus donation locations.
Here's a list of needed pantry items, including the 12 most in-demand products: peanut butter, cereal, canned chunky soups, mac and cheese, dry pasta, pasta sauce, canned fruit and vegetables, canned chicken and tuna, beans (chili, black, brown), rice, hand soap and paper towels. Cash donations can be made by check, cash or Venmo and will go straight to the food pantries.
Donations will be shared with The Shop, Sloss House and Bone Appetite (Veterinary Medicine) food pantries on campus and more than a dozen local pantries.
Distinguished Awards celebration is April 28
Help celebrate the university's highest awards at the annual Distinguished Awards Celebration on Friday, April 28 (2 p.m., Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center and livestreamed, reception follows). The ceremony is open to the public. Information about the recipients of awards given to alumni and friends through the ISU Alumni Association and ISU Foundation, as well as livestream information, is online.
Malaysian Cultural Night is April 23
The Ames Student Association for Malaysians will host Malaysian Cultural Night on Sunday, April 23 (5-9 p.m., Benton Auditorium, Scheman Building). Activities include live performances by Malaysian artists, a stage play highlighting Malaysia's vibrant traditions and customs, an exhibition displaying the country's history and heritage, and authentic Malaysian cuisine served after the performances. Animal Learning Day is April 15
The Block and Bridle club's Animal Learning Day is Saturday, April 15 (9 a.m.-1 p.m., Hansen Agricultural Student Learning Center). It's a free educational event with the goal of bringing together students, faculty and community to teach about modern day agriculture and practices through educational booths that may feature live animals. A free lunch will be provided.
ISU Extension and Outreach Week is April 17-22
Iowa State Extension and Outreach Week is April 17-22. On April 19, extension and outreach advancement staff and Cy will be handing out "#Strong Iowa" stickers and other items to all who stop beginning at 1:30 p.m. All 100 extension county offices also will host events throughout the week.
High performance computing workshop is April 24
Iowa State students and researchers interested in learning about high performance computing are invited to an in-person satellite workshop, Shared Memory Programming Using Open MP, on Monday, April 24 (10 a.m.-4 p.m., 206 Durham). C and Fortran programmers will get a hands-on introduction to OpenMP programming. Attendees will leave with a working knowledge of how to write scalable codes using OpenMP. The event is hosted by the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, a joint research center of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, and sponsored by the National Science Foundation's ACCESS (Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Coordination Ecosystem: Services and Support).
Town hall on digital equity for Iowa is April 25
Interested in digital equity? Attend a Digital Equity Town Hall on Tuesday, April 25 (6 p.m., 0114 Student Innovation Center) to help the state of Iowa understand barriers to the digital aspects of Iowa life.
Digital equity focuses on four main areas: internet access, internet affordability, digital devices and device skills. At the event, attendees can expect a short presentation followed by an audience discussion. The town hall is hosted by the state of Iowa's Office of the CIO and sponsored by the university's Information Technology Services. It's part of a two-month-long series.
Spring football game is April 22
The Cyclone football program will conclude its spring season with an intrasquad game on Saturday, April 22 (11 a.m., Jack Trice Stadium). Admission is free. The format of the game will be determined by the coaching staff based on player availability. The team's last spring game was in 2017.
Support Cyclone small businesses at April 21 fair
Iowa State student- and alumni-owned businesses will showcase their products at a small business fair on Friday, April 21 (3-5:30 p.m., parking lot south of Triangle Fraternity at 2136 Lincoln Way) hosted by the Student Alumni Leadership Council. This event is open to the ISU and Ames communities. Enjoy free refreshments while they last. SAVMA Scamper 5K is April 15
The 39th annual SAVMA Scamper 5K walk/run, hosted by the ISU chapter of the Student American Veterinary Medicine Association for human runners and their dogs, is Saturday, April 15, beginning at 10 a.m. at the College of Veterinary Medicine. The cost is $30 and includes a short-sleeve, moisture-wicking shirt while supplies last; register online. All proceeds will be donated to local animal shelters. The event concludes with a grilled burger lunch.
Out of the Darkness Walk is April 29
The annual Out of the Darkness Iowa State University Walk, hosted by student counseling services, will be Saturday, April 29 (10 a.m., south campanile lawn). The walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s education and support programs and its goal to reduce the annual U.S. rate of suicide 20% by the year 2025. The walk will include a kick off with personal sharing. Create a walking team, register to walk and donate at www.afsp.org/IowaState.
Stange Road reconstruction begins April 10; expect delays
The city of Ames has contracted with Con-Struct for a two-year reconstruction of:
- Stange Road between Blankenburg Drive and 24th Street, in 2023.
- 24th Street, in 2024.
The Stange Road portion of the project has three phases; the first reconstructs the two northbound lanes. Weather allowing, the first phase begins Monday, April 10, with laying temporary pavement on the west side of Stange. This will close the west southbound lane for an estimated two weeks, including access to Greensboro Drive from Stange Road. When this temporary pavement is completed, traffic will be head-to-head on the two southbound lanes of Stange Road, and removal and replacement of the northbound lanes will begin. Work on the northbound lanes will last an estimated three months.
Beginning April 10, drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes to campus when possible and allow extra travel time since delays will occur. The work zone will have low speeds and narrow lanes.
Reserve seats for April 20 wearables design show
Tickets can be reserved online for an end-of semester "wearables design" show Thursday, April 20 (7 p.m., atrium, College of Design). Student teams from 16 sections of the college's first-year design studio will share their final projects -- more than 70 in all -- during the show. Designs are inspired by music or sound; they also integrate outdoor elements in response to the assigned theme of "nature in excess." For those unable to secure tickets, the show will be livestreamed on the college's YouTube channel.

Shivvers lecture focuses on the power of mini forests
Alumna Hannah Lewis, author of "Mini-Forest Revolution: Using the Miyawaki Method to Rapidly Rewild the World," will give the 2023 Shivvers Memorial Lecture on Thursday, April 6 (5:30 p.m., 3580 Memorial Union). Her book promotes an international, "doable" movement to restore biodiversity by transforming empty lots, backyards and degraded land into mini forests. This ISU lectures program event is co-hosted by the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture. It's free and the public is welcome. The Shivvers lectures focus on issues of sustainability, agriculture and the food system.
Call for proposals for fall conference on peace building and social change
On Sept. 15-17, the history department and the Sustainable Peace faculty learning community will host the annual conference of the Peace and Justice Studies Association, a professional association for scholars in the field of peace and conflict studies. Faculty, students and staff are invited to propose papers that engage with questions of peace in a variety of ways. Submissions will be accepted in a range of formats including individually submitted papers; films, creative works or art presentations; roundtable discussions; interactive workshops; or panels (3-4 papers or presenters linked thematically). Annual Hertz lecture on emerging ag issues is April 11
Animal science alumnus Tim Glenn, who serves as executive vice president of the seed business unit at Corteva Agriscience, will deliver the 2023 Carl and Marjory Hertz Lecture on Emerging Issues in Agriculture on Tuesday, April 11 (7 p.m., 127 Curtiss). His talk, "Industry Perspectives and Emerging Trends in the Global Agriculture," is free and open to the public.
Campus drive for canned food, hygiene supplies runs through April 14
The student organization Campus Service Council is accepting donations for a food drive for SHOP, the campus student food pantry; and a hygiene supply drive to benefit SHOP and Ames' Bridge Home. A list of suggested items for each drive is on the council's website. Donation boxes will be available in six campus locations through Friday, April 14:

Cat litter buckets needed for glass disposal in labs
Staff in environmental health and safety (EH&S) and facilities planning and management repurpose empty Tidy Cats® litter buckets (35-pound size) to collect glass in laboratories across campus, and more buckets are needed for the waste and recycling program. To donate empty buckets, email ehs_envprog@iastate.edu to coordinate a pickup, or bring buckets to the EH&S Services Building on the north side of campus.

'State Day' virtual program is archived
The ISU Alumni Association celebrated Iowa State's 165th Founders Day on March 22 with a virtual "State Day" program (archived online, 42 minutes in length). Alumni and friends who joined from around the globe learned about the innovative work happening at the ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship, stepped inside the historic Joan Bice Underwood Tearoom and saw how students are making an impact on campus and in the community.
Stuart Smith path closes March 27 for several weeks
The shared use path through Stuart Smith Park east of University Boulevard and adjacent to the Iowa State Center, will close Monday, March 27, likely through the end of April. The closure facilitates sewer work across University Boulevard as part of infrastructure upgrades for the CYTown development at the center. The impacted section of the path starts just south of the pedestrian bridge and continues to South Fourth Street. In addition, the pedestrian path along the west side of University Boulevard will be closed all summer for this project. The preferred detour is posted.
Dogs on leashes welcome at Reiman Gardens Tuesdays in April
Every Tuesday (4:30-7:30 p.m.) in April, visitors to Reiman Gardens are welcome to bring their dogs to enjoy the gardens' outdoor areas. During these Rovers at Reiman events, dogs must remain on hard surfaces or turf and aren't allowed in flower beds or other posted areas. Dogs also must be current on vaccinations and remain leashed at all times (non-retractable leashes are required). Dogs and owners will be given a colored ribbon (red, yellow or green) to attach to collars that reflects a dog's comfort level with interacting with other dogs or humans. The fee is $5 per dog; dog owners pay the usual gardens admission (free for members and ISU students) and must sign a liability waiver.
Award recipients: Student employee, supervisor of the year
Last week, the office of student financial aid honored outstanding student workers for their contributions to campus, as demonstrated in five categories: community service, diversity and inclusion, leadership, technology and innovation, and critical thinking. From 47 nominations, a selection committee chose these students (listed with their employing unit):
- Student Employee of the Year: Jamie Hefley, biomedical sciences
- Student Employees of Distinction: Hannah Uhrich, human development and family studies; Alexias Townsend, ISU dining; Jack Stevenson, recreation services
In partnership with university human resources, the student financial aid team also selected an inaugural Student Employee Supervisor of the Year this spring. Selection reflects mentoring, professionalism and leadership provided to hourly student employees. Nearly 30 individuals were nominated, and these supervisors were selected:
- Student Employee Supervisor of the Year: Linda DeSchane, ITS Solution Center, who oversees nearly 40 hourly student employees
- Student Employee Supervisor of the Year finalist: Raquel Espin Palazon, genetics, development and cell biology
The two winners received a prize for their achievement, and their nominations will be forwarded for additional consideration at the regional level.
Veenker golf course opens March 24
Iowa State's Veenker Memorial Golf Course and driving range on North Stange Road will open for the season on Friday, March 24. ISU students, faculty and staff receive discounts on season passes. Additionally, Mondays and Thursdays are designated "ISU student days" year-round, with daily green fee discounts available. More information is online or call 515-294-6727.
Ivy College of Business online MBA available this fall
The Ivy College of Business announced last week that its part-time professional MBA program will be available fully online this fall. Students in the program can choose to take courses online or in a hybrid format with one class/week in person at the college's Capital Square location in downtown Des Moines. Registration is open. Global Gala is March 24
The Global Gala celebrates all cultures and promotes the diversity at the university. Student organizations showcase their cultural heritage through music, dance and fashion. The gala is free and open to the public on Friday, March 24 (7 p.m., MU Great Hall). Doors open at 6 p.m. and light refreshments, including a sampling of foods from different cultures, will be served.
Who knew financial literacy packed the fun?
April is Financial Literacy Month, and the office of student financial success is hosting events for ISU students all month, including:
- Paint a Piggy Bank: Saving Strategies and the Importance of Having an Emergency Fund, April 6 (4 p.m., MU Oak Room), attendees decorate and take home their own mini piggy bank while learning about the importance of and tips for saving
- A Humorous Guide to Financial Success, April 19 (6 p.m., 2630 MU), ISU lecture series event with comedic financial speaker and author Colin Ryan
- CashCab, April 26 (11 a.m.-2 p.m., central campus), staff in the office of student financial success will provide golf cart rides around campus and prizes to students who answer financial literacy trivia questions

SALC, the Student Alumni Leadership Council, will host a State Day celebration for students on central campus Wednesday, March 22 (noon-3 p.m.), that features free lunch, desserts, inflatables, a dunk tank and Cyclone swag. The Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm was established on March 22, 1858.

Language and communication justice series continues March 29
Faculty, staff and students are invited to a virtual panel event, Rewriting, Reclaiming and Reorienting in Digital Spaces, on Wednesday, March 29 (4-5:15 p.m., via Webex). Artists and designers Ashlee Bird, Joseph Erb and Casey Koyczan each will share their work advocating for Indigenous language justice through technology and design, followed by a Q&A with attendees. Learn to swim this spring
Recreation services is offering swim lessons for adults and the children (ages 5-12 years) of Iowa State faculty, staff and students this spring, March 28-April 30. Adult sessions meet Tuesdays and Thursdays; youth lessons on Mondays and Wednesdays. Lessons are 30 minutes. The price varies based on rec services membership. ISU police department therapy dog Zosia will celebrate her 12th birthday on Wednesday, March 8 from 3-4 p.m. All are welcome to join outside of Parks Library and enjoy cookies, balloons and a goodie bag.
Jump start funds available for low-cost course infrastructure
Proposals are due March 31 for projects to develop a sustainable infrastructure to support low-cost and no-cost course materials for students, one of the nine Jump Start initiatives in the university's strategic plan. A second round of funding will address course content. Criteria and guidelines for submission are online.
Conversation continues on support for families in campus communities
ADVANCE Midwest Partnership, of which Iowa State is a member, is hosting a second virtual conversation about on-campus child care and family support Thursday, March 30 (noon-1:30 p.m. CST). This is a continuation of a Jan. 26 conversation, and the focus will be on strategies for implementing child care infrastructure that's flexible to better meet the family needs of a campus community rich in cultural, ethnic and gender diversity. Wendy Wagner Robeson, Wellesley Centers for Women, Massachusetts; and Autumn Green, 2023 Urban Institute fellow and visiting scholar-activist at the University of Michigan, will lead the session. Free workshop answers questions about starting a small business
Anyone who has ever considered starting a small business is invited to a free "crash course" workshop, Smart Start, Saturday, March 4 (9 a.m.-4 p.m., Ames Chamber of Commerce, 304 Main St.). Topics to be covered by local professionals include insurance, taxes, applying for loans and grants, intellectual property, business organization, registration and operations. Pitch off finale rescheduled for March 2
Winners of the college-by-college Pitch Off preliminary rounds (Feb. 13-17) will compete for a top prize of $5,000 at the Pitch Off finale Thursday, March 2 (2-5 p.m., 4250 Student Innovation Center). The Feb. 22-23 ice storm postponed the event a week. In each of two categories -- new idea for a business and existing business -- student pitches also will be rewarded for second place ($2,500) and third place ($1,500). Spectators are welcome.
