Dogs and owners welcome at Howl-O-Ween
Reiman Gardens will host its annual Howl-O-Ween, a special event for dog lovers and their canine companions, on Friday, Oct. 31 (4:30-7 p.m., Reiman Gardens). Activities include a canine costume contest (captured with photos shared on Reiman Gardens' Facebook page the next day for public voting and prizes for the three best costumes) and complimentary swag bag for dogs. Outside Scoop will be on site offering ice cream and pup cups for purchase. Pre-registration is encouraged but not required. Regular admission rates apply (free for members and ISU students).
Save the date: Reception for Wintersteen is Dec. 4
The university community will hold a farewell reception for President Wendy Wintersteen and her husband, Robert Waggoner, on Thursday, Dec. 4 (3:30 p.m., doors open at 3 p.m., MU Great Hall). A 30-minute program will begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by a reception. Wintersteen will retire from the university on Jan. 1.
Stange Road returns to four lanes
With pedestrian paths, streetlights and lane striping complete, Stange Road north of 13th Street opened to all four lanes of traffic Friday afternoon, Oct. 24.
Earn 8 CPE credits at ISU accounting conference
The department of accounting will host its annual Contemporary Issues in Accounting Conference on Monday, Nov. 24 (8 a.m.-4 p.m., Gerdin Business Building). Earn eight credits of continuing professional education, including two credits of ethics education. This year's conference features industry leaders and Ivy College of Business faculty, with topics ranging from generative AI to adapting to changes in the accounting profession. Registration is $220 through Nov. 7, $240 after and includes breakfast and lunch. Registration ends Nov. 17.
Nominations due Nov. 1 for MLK Advancing One Community awards
The division of student affairs announces that nominations are open through Nov. 1 for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Advancing One Community Awards. The awards recognize efforts to enhance and cultivate a welcoming university community. Up to three $500 awards may be awarded in the categories of employee, student and/or group. Recipients of the Advancing One Community Award will have demonstrated commitment to the principles and goals of King over a sustained period of time. Nominations should demonstrate the nominee's commitment to bringing about positive change to Iowa State through their volunteerism, engagement, scholarship, research, teaching and/or program development. Block and Bridle sausage and cheese orders close Nov. 1
The Block and Bridle Club's annual summer sausage and cheese sale is open. Orders close on Nov. 1. Orders will be available for pick-up during the weeks of Nov. 17 and Dec. 8. The summer sausage is made in the ISU Meat Lab, and cheese curds and cheese blocks are sourced from Homestead Dairy in Waukon. Accepted payments are: cash or check by mail and during pickup, or card on Nov. 17 and Dec. 11 (card payment will include a 5% fee).
Industry experts to share AI integration skills they seek in new employees
Faculty and administrators in all disciplines are invited to a workshop, "Bridging AI Innovation: Aligning Industry Expectations with Academic Excellence," on Thursday, Oct. 30 (noon-2 p.m., 2245 Coover). Experts and decision makers in web design, architecture, data center demand and AI integration in finance will discuss the skillsets they look for from new personnel and college graduates to fill the skills gap. Participants will leave with a stronger understanding of methodologies for their coursework to use AI in a way that teaches students the skillsets most transferable to design firms and the business community. Research project managers will look at management tools Nov. 11
The Research Project Management Council, supported by the office of the vice president for research, will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 11 (3 p.m., via Zoom) to learn about project management tools available through Microsoft and Jira. Faculty, staff roles in a student AI challenge
Student government, with support from provost Jason Keith and Faculty Senate past president Rahul Parsa, is organizing AI@ISU Innovation Challenge, a student competition open to all majors aimed at developing AI prototypes that solve real campus challenges. Participants may compete individually or in teams of up to five members. The year-long project began last week with info sessions, includes a Nov. 1 registration deadline and Jan. 29 checkpoint, and concludes in April with a showcase event featuring poster presentations, elevator pitches and cash awards of $250-$2,000. Faculty and staff volunteers are sought to assist three ways:
- Share the competition with your students in class this month.
- Submit campus challenges or project ideas that student teams could address.
- Serve as a faculty or staff mentor for a student team.

Cloud service outage impacts Canvas access and performance
The Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage early Monday is impacting Canvas learning management system's access and performance, which also impacts ISU administrative tools. AWS is the leading provider of cloud infrastructure technology. Status updates are available on the:
- Instructure (Canvas developer and owner) status website. IT Services currently doesn't have updates from the company on the expected restoration of Canvas operations.

Snow blower service days are Nov. 7-8
The Agricultural Systems Technology Club will host its annual snow blower service days Nov. 7 (1-6 p.m.), and Nov. 8 (8 a.m.-1 p.m.), at Sukup Hall. Governor awards paid holidays to state employees
Gov. Kim Reynolds has announced two additional paid holidays in 2025 as a show of appreciation for state employees' service. It's the sixth consecutive year she has directed the reward for employees' dedication and accomplishments. As shared in an Oct. 20 email, Iowa State will implement the paid holidays on Wednesday, Nov. 26, and Wednesday, Dec. 24, in connection with other university holidays. Normal holiday procedures will be followed on these days. Supervisors should begin to make decisions on necessary operations and work schedules for the two paid holidays, and units are asked to communicate the changes to their customers and constituents. "Thank you for all that you do for Iowa State," wrote President Wendy Wintersteen and vice president for university human resources Kristi Darr in their email message to the university community.
Fix to Workday slowness will start at 5 p.m. Thursday
At 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, Workday will become unavailable for approximately four hours while an IT Services team and Workday team work together to implement a fix in the system. An issue with the Workday system, not university factors, is causing slowness and delays in the system. IT Services will post updates to its Status Hub regularly until the problem is resolved.
Sustainability celebration is Oct. 20 on central campus
October is International Campus Sustainability Month and the office of sustainability is hosting a Campus Sustainability Month Celebration on Monday, Oct. 20 (10 a.m.-2 p.m., south library lawn). The observance empowers students, faculty and staff to take action now toward a sustainable future. All are invited to learn about campus and community sustainability efforts -- plus how to implement sustainability practices into their everyday lives. Free bike tune-ups from the ISU Adventure Program will be offered and hands-on "Green It Yourself" activities will be available. Green prizes will be available along with a grand prize drawing for gift cards. Attendees are invited to bring a reusable mug for a free beverage and a nonperishable food donation for the campus food pantry SHOP.
'Cinderella' ballet tickets go on sale Oct. 17
Tickets for an April 14 dance performance of "Cinderella" by Los Angeles-based World Ballet Company go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, via Ticketmaster. Tickets start at $40 for the 7 p.m. show in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium.
Search begins for enrollment management leader
Iowa State has launched the search for its next associate vice president for enrollment management. A search committee, led by interim assistant provost Sriram Sundararajan, will begin its work in the coming days with plans to have a permanent leader in place by the start of the spring semester. Executive director of admissions Katharine Johnson Suski currently is serving in an interim associate VP role. Enrollment management includes the offices of admissions, new student programs and student financial aid and the university registrar.
Sorority- and fraternity-hosted indoor trick-or-treat is Oct. 26
Iowa State's Sorority and Fraternity Community invites families to the annual Trick-O-Treat on Sunday, Oct. 26 (noon-4 p.m., MU Great Hall).This event is free with no registration needed and open to the entire family. Chapters will host games for everyone to play and provide lots of candy to take home. Children, family members and participants are encouraged to wear their best family-friendly costume.

Reminder: Flu shot clinic concludes Oct. 17
A free employee flu shot clinic runs through Oct. 17 (9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily), at the fitness studio (room 1218) in the southeast corner of State Gymnasium. No appointment or registration is needed, and participants check in electronically with their ISU ID number when they arrive. If possible, employees are asked to wear a short-sleeve or loose-fitting shirt to give the nurse easier access to an upper arm. Oct. 9 was the date the high-dose flu vaccine was available.
Virtual interviews with presidential semifinalists set for Oct. 20-21
The Iowa State University Presidential Search Committee will meet Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 20-21, at the Alumni Center to interview and evaluate (PDF) semifinalist candidates. Interviews will be conducted in closed session and candidates will not be identified publicly. Eight candidates have been invited to interview virtually.
C.Y. Stephens is focus of Oct. 22 book talk in Des Moines
ISU retiree and author Steve Jones will talk about his book, "A Giving Man, The Story of C.Y. Stephens," on Wednesday, Oct. 22 (6:30 p.m., Beaverdale Books, 2629 Beaver Ave., Des Moines). The book is the life story of the Georgia farm boy who used his smarts and Iowa State education to build an East Coast dairy empire, but never lost his love for Iowa and helped his friend "Jimmy" Hilton raise funds for the Iowa State Center. The performing arts auditorium bears his name. The book was published last year by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and funded by alumnus Murray and Valerie Wise and the Wise Family Foundation. Copies of the book are in the University Book Store.

Cyclone Family Weekend is Oct. 10-12
Cyclone Family Weekend, a time for parents and younger siblings of undergraduates to visit campus, is this weekend, Oct. 10-12. It opens with a Friday afternoon sand volleyball tourney and evening welcome reception in the Student Innovation Center, and continues with open houses across campus, tours of cool facilities, performances and many activities. Most events are on campus; many are free, though some require advance registration.
Register for a landscape session for your home
Members of the Landscape Club are booking fall design sessions on Saturday, Oct. 18 (four time slots beginning at 9 a.m.). Each one-hour session is $160 and includes: basic site overview, plant recommendations and a landscape perspective drawing. Slots are limited and are allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis. Another design day will be held in the spring. Proceeds support the club's involvement in the National Collegiate Landscape Competition.
Safe fitness is focus of annual 'Rock On in Retirement' symposium
ISU Retirees' 13th annual Rock on in Retirement symposium, "Easy Ways to Be Fit in Retirement," will be held Thursday, Oct. 30 (8:30 a.m.-noon, Alumni Center). Two local experts committed to helping older adults stay active, independent and safe, Dr. Colleen Schwartz and Abbie Coniglio, will lead presentations that blend science, community insight and hands-on experience -- drawing from national guidelines and their work with the Story County Fall Prevention Coalition. The symposium is open to the public, and registration is online. Participants will learn more about:
- Movement -- whether seated, standing or supported by a chair -- as a powerful tool for maintaining strength, balance and confidence.

Get started with community-engaged research
Jane Rongerude, faculty fellow for community-engaged research (CER) in the office of the vice president for research, will lead an interactive workshop to introduce CER on Monday, Oct. 13 (1-2 p.m., MU Cardinal Room). Learn what community engaged research is; how you can add CER into your research portfolio, classes and community outreach; and why you might want to try it. This is the first workshop in a year-long CER series. Rongerude is an associate professor in urban planning and redevelopment.

A new AI website (ai.iastate.edu) for Iowa State is available, developed through the AI Committee led by the office of the senior vice president and provost. The site is an information hub to explore and support use of artificial intelligence tools at Iowa State. Key features include:
- Overview of AI tools available to the university community and how to access them.
- Comparison chart to help students, faculty and staff choose the right tool for their needs.
- Q&A section addressing secure and responsible use of AI, including guidance on data protection.
- Links to additional university sites and resources about AI.

Funeral for former faculty member Denis McGee is Oct. 4
A Mass of Christian burial for former plant pathology faculty member and Seed Science Center seed pathology specialist Denis McGee will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 4 (11 a.m., Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 2210 Lincoln Way), with a time of visitation held prior (9:30-11:00 a.m.), also at the church. McGee was a member of the plant pathology faculty from 1978 to 2005. Presidential search committee meets Oct. 6
The next meeting of the ISU Presidential Search Committee is Monday, Oct. 6 (9 a.m.-1 p.m., Alumni Center). Most of the meeting (PDF) will be a closed session to evaluate applicants for the Iowa State presidency. At the conclusion of the closed session, it's anticipated that committee leaders will share the number of candidates who advanced as semi-finalists and next steps in the search process.

The city of Ames is hosting two "Fire Station No. 2 Spotlight" events at which residents can learn more about the proposed relocation of the nearly 60-year-old Welch Avenue fire station to a site on State Avenue owned by Iowa State and provided for this use at no cost to the city. Both spotlights will be held at the current station, 132 Welch Ave.:

- Wednesday, Oct. 8 (4-6 p.m.)
Visitors can meet firefighters and learn more about the city's Nov. 4 bond referendum which, if supported by Ames voters, would build a new station that better serves the city, reduces traffic conflicts in campustown, strengthens the city-university partnership and creates redevelopment opportunities at the Welch Avenue location.

The 25th Iowa Organic Conference will be held Monday, Nov. 17 (8 a.m.-4 p.m., University of Iowa Memorial Union). Iowa State's Organic Agriculture Program is a co-host. The 2026 Garden Calendar, "A Bounty of Bulbs," may be purchased for $9 through the ISU Extension Store, online or at 119 Printing and Publications Building. This year's edition highlights the beauty and variety of bulbs, such as spring tulips, summer lilies, autumn crocuses and even winter's amaryllis, adding color to landscapes year-round.
Homecoming buttons go on sale Sept. 29
Buttons to celebrate Homecoming 2025 (Oct. 19-25) go on sale for $5 on Monday, Sept. 29, in the University Book Store, Memorial Union, and the Innovate 1858 store, Student Innovation Center. The button provides daily admission to lunch on central campus Monday-Thursday of Homecoming week (the faculty/staff-dedicated line returns) and a 10% discount at the Innovate 1858 store that week. Campus units can order buttons in bulk (minimum of 10 buttons) for delivery.
Nominate a senior for the Wallace E. Barron Award
The ISU Alumni Association is accepting nominations for the Wallace E. Barron All-University Senior Award, which recognizes outstanding ISU seniors who display high character, outstanding achievements in academics and university/community activities, and promise for continuing these exemplary qualities as alumni. Applicants must be an undergraduate student with senior classification status (90+ credits) and a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the end of the 2025 fall semester. Financial education workshop series begins Oct. 7
The Financial Wellness at Work project supports Iowa State employees with additional financial wellness support services. The financial education workshop series begins Oct. 7 with "Time for a Financial Checkup" followed by "Money Smart: Taking Control of your $," which is a two-part workshop on Oct. 16 and 30. "Mission Possible: Saving" will be Nov. 5, and the series concludes Nov. 12 with "Borrowing Smart." The fall series virtual workshops are held from noon until 1 p.m. and is made possible through a partnership between ISU Extension and Outreach and university human resources.

Workshop introduces tool for using, sharing public data
ISU Extension and Outreach's Community and Economic Development unit will offer an in-person workshop, "Unlocking the Power of Community Data: Visualizing and Sharing Your Local Data," on Monday, Oct. 20 (8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Economic Development Core Facility). Learn how to use Tableau Public, a tool for creating interactive dashboards and data stories with a free, user-friendly method that translates raw data into compelling visuals. The workshop is for community leaders, analysts, planners, nonprofit staff and anyone who wants to make sense of data. The cost is $200; ISU faculty and staff and county extension employees receive a 15% discount. Online registration is open through Thursday, Oct. 16.
Faculty, staff volunteers sought for Three-Minute Thesis prelims
The Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) planning committee seeks faculty and staff volunteers for preliminary rounds on the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 22 (2:30-3:30 p.m., 4-5 p.m.). The 3MT is a competition in which graduate students summarize their research with audiences outside their discipline in three minutes or less and using one static slide. Volunteers serve in judging, timekeeping and doorkeeping roles. Complete an online sign-up form to indicate your interest in volunteering.
Welch Avenue has reopened in campustown
The city of Ames project that had closed Welch Avenue from Chamberlain to Hunt streets since late April has concluded. The upgrades included water main, storm and sanitary sewer replacement, street and sidewalk reconstruction and street light replacement.
Oct. 10-12 'Spirits in the Gardens' tickets are on sale
Reiman Gardens is selling time-entry tickets for its annual "Spirits in the Gardens" halloween celebration, being held this year the weekend of Oct. 10-12. Tickets are $16 ($14 for members and ISU students, $7 youth 2-12 years). Enjoy more than 1,000 hand-carved jack-o'-lanterns, chemistry shows, cosplay, trick-or-treating and (optional) costumes.
Stange Road traffic switches to center lanes Sept. 17
Two-directional traffic on north Stange Road will move to the center two lanes in time for the morning commute on Wednesday, Sept. 17. Traffic will remain head-to-head in the center two lanes. Additionally, the second southbound lane will open south of the Ioway Creek bridge to shorten wait times at the traffic light at 13th Street. With traffic in the center lanes, the contractor will install the new pedestrian path and light fixtures on the west side of the road. The intent is to open the eastern-most lane (northbound) when the street lights are functioning.

Danielle Allen, director of the Allen Lab for Democracy Renovation at the Harvard Kennedy School's Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, and director of the Democratic Knowledge Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, will explore the themes of liberty, equality and the power of language in the Declaration of Independence and their relevance today in a lecture on Thursday, Oct. 2 (6 p.m., MU Sun Room). Her talk is titled, "Do Words Matter? The Language of Liberty in the Declaration of Independence."
Former Post leader reflects on media expansion
Eugene Robinson, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, author, political analyst and former assistant managing editor of The Washington Post, will present the 2025 Manatt-Phelps Lecture in Political Science on Wednesday, Oct. 1 (6 p.m., MU Sun Room). He'll look at how the rise of 24-hour cable news, the internet, social media and corporate consolidation has transformed media -- and what that means for news audiences.
