Jan. 16 reception set for Women Impacting ISU calendar honorees

The 12 women honored by the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics in its 13th annual Women Impacting ISU calendar will be recognized in a Jan. 16 ceremony from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room. A half-hour program will begin at 4 p.m. After the program, copies of the calendar will be distributed for free. Three students, four faculty and five staff members were selected for the calendar, which honors women whose leadership has made a difference at Iowa State.

Honors poster presentation and reception is Dec. 5

The University Honors Program invites the campus community to its fall 2018 poster presentation and reception Wednesday, Dec. 5 (3-5 p.m., MU Great Hall). Fall 2018 Honors graduates, as well as other Honors students, will be present to answer questions and speak with individuals interested in their projects.

Classrooms open for after-hours studying during dead week

Several classrooms in three buildings will be available as evening study spaces during dead week, Dec. 3-7. The classrooms, which seat about 30 each, will be open to students on a drop-in basis from 5:10 to 11 p.m. Monday-Friday. Room locations are:

Parks Library announces dead week, finals week services

Parks Library will be open 24/7 Dec. 2-13. Barks@Parks is planned each day during Dead Week, along with other stress-reducing activities, including chair massages (1-4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday).

Register now for Project LEA/RN workshop Jan. 8-9

Project LEA/RN will host a workshop on Jan. 8-9, 2019 (9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily, 1022 Agronomy) aimed at training educators to help their students learn the kind of thinking required by professionals to solve complex problems. Faculty, staff and graduate students are welcome. Participants will share insights about the brain based on current research, engage in strategies that promote interaction and deep thinking, and apply them to situations in which they facilitate learning -- classes, orientation sessions, extension meetings or other learning situations. Memorial service for Ray Arritt is Nov. 27

A memorial service for agronomy professor Ray Arritt will be held Tuesday, Nov. 27 (10:30 a.m., Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St.). A reception follows at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1416 20th St. A visitation will be held Monday, Nov. 26 (5-7 p.m.) at the Stevens site. Arritt, an ISU faculty member since 1993, died of a stroke Nov. 14. Memorials may be directed to the Emergency Residence Project of Ames and the Food Bank of Iowa. Obituary.

Forestry Club tree sales start this weekend

Members of the Forestry Club will sell Christmas trees and wreaths over the next three weekends. The sale location is the maintenance building lot at Reiman Gardens except for Saturdays, Nov. 24 and Dec. 1 (home football game days), when the sale moves to the Kildee pavilion. Tree prices range from $30 to $60; wreath prices from $20 to $30. Sale dates and times are:

  • Saturday, Sunday, Nov. 24, 25, Dec. 1, 2, 8, 9: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Thursday, Nov. 29, Dec. 6: 3-6 p.m.

Advancing One Community Award nominations due Dec. 1

Dec. 1 is the nomination deadline for the Advancing One Community Award, which recognizes efforts to create an inclusive university community that embraces justice and equity. Up to three awards may be given in the categories of faculty/staff, student and group, each with a $500 stipend. All current ISU faculty, staff and students, including groups and organizations, are eligible to be nominated. Awards are presented annually in January as part of the university's Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

Register by Nov. 29 for Breakfast with Santa at Reiman Gardens

Enjoy a hearty breakfast buffet, visit with Santa, create holiday-themed crafts, write a letter to Santa and see the train exhibit in the Hughes Conservatory during Reiman Gardens' annual Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 8 (two seatings). Registration and payment for the 8 a.m. seating or the 10 a.m. seating are due Nov. 29. The cost is $15 for youth (adults $22), with $5-$6 discounts for members.

LGBTQIA+ undergrads encouraged to apply for leadership program

ISU undergraduate students are encouraged to apply for Thrive: A Program for Emerging LGBTQIA+ Leaders. The program provides an opportunity for participants to learn more about who they are as LGBTQIA+ individuals and to learn and practice teamwork skills. Four campus sessions are held in January and February, culminating in an all expenses-paid trip to the Midwest Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Transgender, Asexual College Conference Feb. 15-17 in Wichita, Kansas. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2; questions may be directed to the Center for LGBTQIA+ Student Success.

Center waives ticket fees on purchases Nov. 19-21

The Iowa State Center will not appy service fees to ticket purchases Nov. 19-21 (noon-6 p.m. daily) at the Stephens ticket office. This special offer doesn't apply to online Ticketmaster purchases.

Child leave expansion for dual-ISU couples approved

An update to the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) policy has been approved and goes into effect Nov. 15. The change allows parents, when both are employed by Iowa State, to each take 12 weeks of leave for the birth and care of a child within one year of birth, adoption of a child or placement of a foster child. Previously, the policy followed the FMLA restriction that allowed 12 weeks combined between the parents. The intent of the change is to increase the amount of leave for parents in cases where both are employed by Iowa State. The policy has been published and may be viewed in the policy library

Open forums set for LAS associate dean finalists

Open forums will be held Nov. 26-28 for three finalists in the search for an associate dean for research in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. All forums will be held in 302 Catt Hall. Dates and candidates for the part-time position are:

  • Nov. 26 (8-9 a.m.), John Lajoie, professor of physics and astronomy
  • Nov. 27 (9-10 a.m.), Ranjan Maitra, professor of statistics
  • Nov. 28 (10-11 a.m.), Jacob Petrich, professor of chemistry

Test of ISU police phone system scheduled for Monday morning

ISU Police will test redundancy of its phone system from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Nov. 19, to ensure continued reliable communication with dispatch. Anyone calling the non-emergency ISU Police phone number (515-294-4428) may experience intermittent outages during this time. An alternate number (515-294-1777) is available, and in an outage, 911 calls automatically will roll to the Ames Police Department.

Training for youth program leaders is Nov. 29

The offices of Risk Management, Extension and Outreach, and Conference Planning and Management will offer training on Nov. 29 (9-11 a.m., 1155 Administrative Services Building) that provides youth program leaders, administrators and student organization officers information regarding youth-related policies, procedures and forms for successfully conducting youth programs at ISU. The training is for anyone responsible for planning and supervising youth programs or providing administrative support for one. Preregistration is required; send an email to orm@iastate.edu by Nov. 27.

Art Mart to be held Nov. 29-30, Dec. 1

The Workspace in the Memorial Union will host Art Mart, the MU's annual art sale, Nov. 29-30 and Dec. 1 in the Campanile Room. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday (during WinterFest) and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Support the community of Workspace artists and find one-of-a-kind gifts such as functional pottery; beaded, upcycled and glass jewelry; handmade soaps; paintings; watercolors and a variety of blown glass by the ISU Gaffer's Guild. By popular demand, Mystery Boxes will be back, filled with treasures donated by Art Mart participants.

CALS communications, development units relocate to MU

The communications services and development offices in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will relocate from third floor Curtiss Hall to fifth floor Memorial Union during a renovation project at Curtiss. The change takes effect Monday, Nov. 19, with a return to Curtiss tenatively scheduled for next August. Staff phone numbers remain the same. Campus mail may be addressed "5th floor CALS Communications, Memorial Union" or "5th floor CALS Development, Memorial Union."

Reminder: Benefits open change period closes Friday afternoon

The employee benefits (medical, dental, vision) annual open change period closes at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16. Employees are encouraged to review their benefits and beneficiaries, available in AccessPlus, even if they elect to make no changes. 

Needtobreathe concert tickets go on sale Nov. 16

Tickets for a Feb. 21 acoustic concert by the southern rock band Needtobreathe go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, via Ticketmaster, including the Stephens ticket office (noon-6 p.m. Monday-Friday). Ticket prices range from $49.50 to $79.50 for the 7 p.m. show. One dollar from every ticket sale goes to the band's partnership with OneWorld Health to provide sustainable healthcare to regions in East Africa and Central America.

Poinsettia preorders due Nov. 23

The ISU Horticulture Club is taking preorders for holiday poinsettia plants through noon Friday, Nov. 23. Plants come in five colors: red, white, burgandy, pink and red glitter; and two sizes: 6.5 inches ($12) and 10 inches ($32, red and white only). Preorders can be paid for and picked up at any of the retail sale locations (10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily) or in the Horticulture Hall basement Nov. 28-30 (5:15-7 p.m.). All payment is by cash or check. Winter commencement plan follows last year's

Iowa State will hold separate commencement ceremonies next month for undergraduate and graduate students. A Graduate College ceremony begins at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14; an undergraduate ceremony begins at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, both in Hilton Coliseum. The university resumed holding two winter events a year ago after seven years of a consolidated celebration. The intent was to offer a meaningful but shorter event for graduating students and their families on the heels of record enrollment and retention rates.

College convocations and receptions are spread over Friday and Saturday morning. Final exams will conclude Thursday evening, Dec. 13. Commencement weekend will be previewed in the Dec. 13 edition of Inside.

New library catalog focuses on archive collection

CARDinal is a new catalog that provides a way for users to search the Special Collections and University Archives in the University Library. The official launch will occur next summer but researchers and community members are invited to begin using CARDinal now.

Listening sessions planned for Engineering dean search

The search committee for the next dean of the College of Engineering will host two open forums to solicit input from university community members on characteristics they would like to see in the college's next leader. Both sessions will be held in the Howe Hall auditorium and live-streamed on YouTube. Links and other search information are available on the provost office's search website.

Regents' Nov. 15-16 agenda to be posted Thursday morning

The state Board of Regents will meet Thursday-Friday, Nov. 15-16, in Cedar Falls. The committee and full board agendas will be posted on the board's website by 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8.

Live Green's local shopping event is Nov. 10

Live Green's 10-year anniversary celebration event this month is a "Shop Local, Buy Green" event Saturday, Nov. 10, in downtown and campustown. The intent is to encourage the community to buy green by shopping local. More than 25 businesses are participating, all offering reusable bags made from recycled soda bottles and many offering one-day discounts.

Memorial event for former Vet Med faculty member Harley Moon is Nov. 10

An open house visitation and celebration of life for Dr. Harley Moon, professor emeritus of veterinary pathology, will be held Saturday, Nov. 10 (3-5 p.m., Indian Creek Country Club, 63012 260th St., Nevada). Moon died Oct. 7 in Danville, Pennsylvania, at the age of 82 years. He was a faculty member in the College of Veterinary Medicine from 1996 to 2003, the inaugural holder of the Frank Ramsey Endowed Chair in Veterinary Medicine. Moon was with the National Animal Disease Center in Ames (1968-96), rising to the director's post in 1988, and was a collaborator in the Vet Med college for many of those years. Linguistics challenge for high schoolers is Nov. 15

Iowa State's 4th Linguistics Challenge, hosted by the linguistics program, will be held Thursday, Nov. 15 (9 a.m.-2 p.m., MU Sun Room). Approximately 160 Iowa high school students learn about linguistics by collaboratively solving  language puzzles involving various world languages. The event also features a lunch talk by Walt Wolfram, North Carolina State University, a world-renowned expert on American dialects. The university community is invited to observe any portion of the challenge.

January memorial planned for former Greenlee professor Giles Fowler

Giles Fowler, emeritus professor in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, died on Nov. 3. Fowler, 84, was an associate professor when he retired in 2003 after a 22-year career at Iowa State. His family tentatively plans to hold a memorial service in early January at St. John's Episcopal Church in Ames.

Application process underway for next round of inclusion grants

Teams planning to apply for funding from the inclusion initiatives grant program need to submit their intent this month via an online form. The program, administered by the office of diversity and inclusion, awards up to $5,000 for innovative campus initiatives that foster community engagement. Final applications will not be accepted without an intent form. Questions can be emailed to inclusioninitiatives@iastate.edu. Descriptions of the 2018-19 funded initiatives (seven) are available on the diversity and inclusion website.

Library posts online guide for grad students on doing a literature review

The ISU Library has published an online guide for graduate students, How to Conduct a Literature Review. It covers the steps to successfully find and evaluate material to include in literature reviews for theses and dissertations. Questions about the guide may be directed to Jeffrey Kushkowski, instruction and information services coordinator at the library.

The athletics department is selling upper deck tickets (two sections, H and J) for $20 for the Cyclone home football game against Baylor Saturday, Nov. 10. The special offer is good through 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7. Kickoff on Saturday is at 2:30 p.m.

Share your thoughts about CyRide services online or at Nov. 13 forum

CyRide users or potential users are invited to a public input meeting Tuesday, Nov. 13 (6-7:30 p.m., PEO Room, Ames Public Library, 515 Douglas Ave.) regarding possible service tweaks in August 2019. CyRide staff will share eight service proposals developed as a result of customer feedback this summer and fall on the CyRide 2.0 system, which was implemented in May and August. They'll also receive proposals from the public for other changes that improve public transit services. Can't make it to the forum? Individuals may complete an online survey by Dec. 3 and share their preferences with CyRide.
