Julia Badenhope, associate professor of landscape architecture and director of the Iowa's Living Roadways Community Visioning Program, has been named a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects. MacDonald receives ASME young investigator award
Erin MacDonald, ISU mechanical engineering, and affiliated researcher at the U.S. Department of Energy Ames Laboratory, recently received the ASME Design Automation Young Investigator Award. The award recognizes an outstanding young investigator who is making noteworthy contributions in the area of design automation, including research in design representation, design optimization, design evaluation, and/or design integration.
Vance receives honorary doctorate
Judy Vance, Joseph C. And Elizabeth A. Anderlik Professor of Engineering, has received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Engineering from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, U.K. Vance was honored for her preeminence in, and outstanding innovative contribution to, advancing virtual reality engineering design applications, as well as for her influence as an advocate to promote the participation of women in engineering.

Kim receives DARPA Award
Gap-Yong Kim, ISU mechanical engineering, recently received the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Young Faculty Award. The award, established to recognize junior faculty members who show great potential and expose them to the needs of the Department of Defense, will provide $231,912 to fund a two-year project.
Jensen and Christians awarded for applied research
Helen Jensen and Nick Christians were presented the Dean Lee R. Kolmer Award for Excellence in Applied Research Sept. 4 by the ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Jensen, a professor of economics, was recognized for her work in applying economics to nutrition and food policy. Christians, a University Professor of horticulture, was recognized for his research on turfgrass, including a discovery of the herbicide properties of corn gluten meal, which was patented and is used for pre-emergence weed control.

Eisman named AAUW American Fellow
April Eisman, ISU art history, has been named a 2012-2013 American Fellow by the American Association of University Women to study women artists in the former East Germany. AAUW American Fellowships are awarded to highly qualified women scholars who are conducting postdoctoral research, finishing research for publication or completing doctoral dissertations.

Schwieder to Iowa Women's Hall of Fame
Dorothy Schwieder will be inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame on Aug. 25. Schwieder is a well-known Iowa historian and retired Iowa State history professor. The Iowa governor and Iowa Commission on the Status of Women annually pay tribute to four women with the Hall of Fame awards.
Bloebaum wins aeronautics and astronautics award
Christina Bloebaum, who will be joining the aerospace engineering department this fall, has recently received the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Award for 2012 (AIAA MDO Award).
The award was established in 1993 to recognize individuals for outstanding contributions to the development and application of techniques in multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) within aerospace engineering.
Sullivan named regional operations flight commander of the year
Capt. Jake Sullivan, assistant professor of aerospace studies, was named Operations Flight Commander of the Year for the Northwest Region of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps. As Operations Flight Commander for Iowa State’s AFROTC program, he mentored and trained 85 cadets in leadership and followership, customs and courtesies, Air Force processes and Cadet Wing operations. He devoted 16 weeks evaluating over 4,000 cadets from detachments nationwide. His efforts led ISU’s cadet wing to a No. 2 ranking in the Northwest Region in 2011, and resulted in four cadets earning distinguished graduate and three earning superior performer honors. The Northwest Region consists of 34 host detachments and 182 cross-town schools spanning from Indiana to Alaska.
Zanish-Belcher elected to leadership council
Tanya Zanish-Belcher, associate professor and head of Special Collections and University Archives in the ISU Library, has been elected to a three-year council term with the Society of American Archivists. The nine-member council, elected by the 6,100 eligible members of the society, provide leadership to the society and oversee its budget, programs and staff.
