You're invited: Dive-in movie at State Gym pool

ISU's Student Union Board is hosting a viewing of the 2011 Steven Spielberg film, The Adventures of Tintin, Wednesday, April 4 (8 p.m., State Gym pool). Relax in the pool while watching the film on a 16-by-9-foot TV screen. No food or drink is allowed in the pool area. Admission is free for students with an ISU ID; regular fees for non-students apply. Call 4-8081 for more information.

Donate household goods for service learning project

ISU's global resource systems learning community has organized a service learning project to benefit Burmese refugees in Des Moines. The group will collect new and gently used household items and donations in the Horticulture Hall atrium and loading dock (north side of building) on April 4 and 5 (11 a.m.-5 p.m.). Suggested household goods include kitchen items, small appliances, bedding, toiletries and household products. Monetary donations also will be accepted.

Enrichment funds for students available for fall; apply now

The Johnny and Terry Pickett Student Enrichment Fund provides support (up to $1,000) to help facilitate student experiences such as internships, research and study abroad that would enrich a student's career interest or potential. Applicants should be students from underrepresented groups who will pursue a career in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) field. Osborn Club lecture is April 9

Assistant professor of mechanical engineering Erin MacDonald will present the final Osborn Club lecture of the semester April 9 (7 p.m., Molecular Biology auditorium). She will hit the highlights of 40 years of research on pro-environmental behaviors, the understanding/awareness of which is important to successfully designing and marketing sustainable products. Coordination among designers, manufacturers, marketers and government policy makers is essential to the success of sustainable products, according to MacDonald. Osborn Club lectures, which are free and open to the public, follow a monthly dinner meeting of club members.

Regents university students at State Capitol March 29

Iowa State students will join their counterparts from the universities of Iowa and Northern Iowa in the State Capitol rotunda in Des Moines Thursday (March 29) to celebrate higher education achievements in the state. As part of Regents United Day, student representatives will talk about their collegiate experiences with lawmakers and other visitors from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  At a 1 p.m. news conference, ISU Government of the Student Body president Dakota Hoben will join other student leaders and Board of Regents president pro tem Bruce Rastetter in a discussion of the universities' impact on the state.

PRSSA clothing drive and fashion show give back to the community

The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is hosting its second annual “Donate and Look Great Clothing Drive” March 19-28, and Iowa State’s student chapter is participating. Members have put collection boxes in the Union Drive Community Center, Parks Library, Hamilton Hall and the Memorial Union. Donations of spring and summer clothing are encouraged. The group’s goal is to keep the donations within the Story County area, so clothing donations will go to the Ballard Community Clothing Pantry, a local resource center that helps struggling families.
Donations also will be accepted at the PRSSA “Donate and Look Great” business attire fashion show March 28 (7 p.m., MU Pioneer Room). The event is open to the public; admission is at least one clothing item to be donated.
 

Summer tutoring in reading available for 1-12 graders

Iowa State's Fred Duffelmeyer Reading Improvement Clinic offers one-on-one tutoring in reading for children in grades 1-12. Sessions are conducted by graduate students in reading under the guidance of literacy education faculty. Summer session dates are May 29-June 21 (5:30-6:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday, Lagomarcino Hall). Registration is open for hybrid processing symposium

Participants in a 1.5-day symposium (May 9-10, campus) will discuss the challenges of hybrid (thermochemical) processing of biomass and identify opportunities for collaboration. Both industrial and academic participants are invited; and the registration fee is waived for Iowa State students, faculty and staff. Judges still needed for State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa

A record number of students entering the 2012 State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa, March 30-31 at the Iowa State Center, has created an urgent need for more volunteer judges. Individuals with a major, background or degree in science, engineering or technology are sought to serve as judges. Storm spotter training is April 2; register now

All students, faculty and staff -- especially those employees who work outdoors -- are invited to attend the National Weather Service's free storm spotter training on April 2 (1:30-3:30 p.m., MU Gallery). Whether you work or play on a sports field, golf course, farm or yard, this class could be lifesaving. Learn the warning process, elements of a spotter report, thunderstorm basics and storm spotter safety. Registration is encouraged. 

Iowa House honors Geoffroy

The Iowa House honored Gregory Geoffroy March 14 for his "remarkable achievements" in the ISU presidency. In a house resolution, the lawmakers commended the former Iowa State  president for leading the university to such accomplishments as:

  • Achieving record enrollments
  • Bringing in record amounts of sponsored funds
  • Completing the largest-ever fundraising campaign
  • Doubling the number of endowed facutly
  • Renewing the campus infrastructure through numerous building projects
  • Reducing campus energy consumption by 10 percent 
  • Achieving the high student-athlete graduation rate in the Big 12

Club offers lawnmower servicing March 23-24

The Agriculture Systems Technology Club will hold its annual lawnmower service days March 23 (1-6 p.m.) and 24 (8 a.m.-3 p.m.) at Industrial Education II (west of the horse barns; look for signs). This event provides routine service only; major repairs are not offered. The cost is $35 for a push mower, $50 for a riding mower. Pickup and dropoff is available in Ames for an additional fee ($15 push, $20 rider). To request pickup service, call (515) 708-8672 or email by 2 p.m. March 22.

ISU professor of music David Stuart will give a talk March 13 (7 p.m., Ames Public Library) on the British band, The Beatles. Stuart will talk about early covers of Beatles songs by American artists and how the "British invasion" brought our music back to us. Guests will have a chance to win tickets to a March 23 performance by the tribute band, The Fab Four, at Stephens Auditorium. Stuart's talk is free and open to the public.

The Student Activities Center is accepting nominations for the 2012 Student Organization Awards. Award catetories include:

New website details information about provost search

Information about the search for Iowa State’s next provost is available on the new senior vice president and provost website at search.provost.iastate.edu.  The search committee, led by College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dean Wendy Wintersteen, plans to move quickly. An aggressive timeline calls for bringing  candidates to campus for interviews in mid-April. Wintersteen recently put out a call for nominations for the position. Nominations and applications should be be submitted by March 31.

Turf team brings home 12th win in 14 years

The ISU Turf Bowl team won first place for the 12th time in 14 years at the Collegiate Turf Bowl held in Las Vegas. Members of the winning team are Isaac Mertz, Dan Strey, Shane Lohman and Casey Sheehy.The team is coached by Nick Dunlap, a graduate student in horticulture, and the team adviser is Nick Christians, University Professor of horticulture.

All available tickets for U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's town hall meeting on March 1 (11:30 a.m., Howe Hall atrium) were distributed by Wednesday morning. No one will be admitted without a ticket. For those with tickets, the doors will open at 9:15 a.m. and close at 11 a.m.

For those not able to get a ticket, the College of Engineering will provide an online live stream of Biden's remarks.

Stash the Trash/Veishea Service Day is March 24

Volunteers may work alone or with an organization or family members to pick up debris around the community or help with other service projects (indoor options are available). Trash bags and gloves may be picked up in the Reiman Gardens parking lot; a free lunch also is provided at that location. Officials anticipate snow ordinance will go into effect at 10 p.m. Feb. 23

Based on the weather forecast, the City of Ames Snow Ordinance will likely go into effect at 10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23.  Vehicles parked on snow routes (marked by red and white signs) must be moved or they will be ticketed and towed. Vehicles should be moved to off-street parking or to streets that aren't snow routes. To assist in plowing efforts, all Ames  residents are asked to remove parked vehicles from residential streets. However, only those on snow routes are required to move vehicles. The snow ordinance goes into effect when 2 inches of snow has fallen on major city streets and remains in effect until streets are completely plowed and it has stopped snowing.

Shannon Cutts, founder of MentorCONNECT, will present "Beauty Undressed" Feb. 29 (7 p.m., MU Great Hall) as part of Eating Disorders Awareness Week. Cutts, who battled anorexia and bulimia for 15 years, will talk about how to put "beauty" into perspective, and how mentoring can help those stuggling with eating disorders. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Faculty, staff and graduate students are invited to register for an upcoming seminar and a pair of workshops at the ISU Library. The Feb. 22 seminar (10-11 a.m.) , "Finding Industry Standards at ISU: An Introduction," will provide basics on the creation and approval of standards. Participants also will learn how to search and locate them in the library. "Get X-Cited About Cited Reference Searching" will be the topic of two hands-on workshops, Feb. 22 (3-4:30 p.m.) and Feb. 28 (9:30-11 a.m.). Faculty, student applications for undergrad research program due March 30

Faculty and students who are interested in participating in Iowa State's undergraduate research assistantship program in 2012-13 should submit an application by March 30. The program is intended to promote graduate study by giving outstanding students hands-on experience in a formal reserach environment. Students must be juniors or seniors next fall with a GPA of at least 3.25. Students and faculty are encouraged to seek out those with similar interests for possible matches. Student scholarship deadlines are approaching

The Office of Student Financial Aid is accepting applications for three Iowa State scholarships for 2012-13:

ISU Community Service Scholarship, March 1 deadline. Recipients are selected for their service in Ames or Story County while enrolled at Iowa State.

ISU Working Scholars Award, March 1 deadline. Sophomore recipients from an Iowa high school are selected for academic achievement, financial need and motivation/willingness to help themselves through college with minimum debt. 

Roy J. Carver Scholarship, April 1 deadline. F-T junior recipients  from an Iowa high school are selected for academic achievement, financial need and extenuating circumstances that present challenges to obtaining a degree.

Faculty and advisers are asked to share this information with students who qualify to apply.

Prominent writers to keynote annual Wildness Symposium

Readings, craft talks and panel discussions highlight the Feb. 26-27 Symposium on Wildness, Wilderness & the Creative Imagination. This year's festival, set in the Memorial Union, has an "outliers" theme. Collegiate invention competition welcomes entries

The Invent Now 2012 Collegiate Inventors Competition is accepting entries through June 15. The annual competition recognizes student inventions that one day could make significant contributions to society. More than $100,000 in cash prizes will be awarded this year to undergraduate and graduate students and their advisers. Singing Valentine fund-raiser benefits student organization

The Iowa State Singers will be taking orders for singing valentines on Feb. 8-10 (10 a.m.-noon and 1-2 p.m.) at a booth outside the Memorial Union's west student office space. For $10, a quartet of Iowa State Singers will "deliver" Valentine songs to locations in Ames, or sing them live nationwide by phone. Deliveries will be made Monday, Feb. 13, or Tuesday, Feb. 14.

In addition to hosting for a second consecutive time the regional Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (Jan. 15-21), ISU performing arts students received several awards (PDF) or made it to advanced rounds in the competition. Registration is open for the 13th annual Iowa State Conference on Race and Ethnicity (ISCORE), to be held March 2 (8 a.m.-5 p.m., Memorial Union).  ISCORE is a comprehensive forum on issues of race and ethnicity at Iowa State and beyond. Students, staff and faculty will provide concurrent sessions, and Nana Osei-Kofi, assistant professor of educational leadership and policy studies, will provide the morning address. The keynote presentation will be from Ames resident and social justice educator Grace Amemiya. 

Entries needed for "Assembled" student exhibition

The Student Union Board is seeking entries for "Assembled: Metal, Wood, Clay, Fiber and Mixed Media," a student juried art exhibition that will run Feb. 9-March 18 (MU Pioneer Room). Artwork must incorporate metal, wood, clay, fiber, or be mixed media. Students may drop off up to three entries (2D or 3D) on Sunday, Feb. 5 (noon-3 p.m., MU Pioneer Room). Spring career fair is Feb. 8

The colleges of Business, Human Sciences, and Liberal Arts and Sciences will hold their joint spring career fair Feb. 8 (noon-6 p.m., Hilton). It is open to the public. More than 100 companies have registered and are looking to fill internships, co-ops and full-time positions. Students should bring their ISU ID to the fair to receive a professionally printed name tag. Current ISU students also may register on ISU's Career Management Service site for the lunch being held prior to the fair at Johnny's in Hilton.

Tearoom adds Tuesday, Thursday evening meals

Beginning Jan. 26, the Joan Bice Underwood Tearoom, 23 MacKay, will serve an evening meal (5:30-6:30 p.m.) on Tuesdays and Thursdays during spring semester. Reservations are required; call 4-3330. The menu and price ($6.50) are the same as that served at the noon seating. Tearoom To-Go, the Tearoom's carry-out option, also is available during Tearoom evening hours. It includes drinks, small items and sides, such as wraps, sandwiches, soups, pasta and fruit salads, and baked items. All food items are prepared on site by HRI 380 students.

The $10,000 annual scholarship is for mathematics, science or engineering majors who wish to earn teaching certification at the middle/junior high or high school level at one of Iowa's public universities. 100 employers expected at spring CALS career fair day Feb. 1

About 100 employers are expected to recruit students Feb. 1 at the CALS spring career fair to be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Hall. “We are seeing companies and organizations that were not at our fall event attend the spring event,” said Mike Gaul, director of CALS Career Services. “This is especially true for many of the natural resource-type organizations.” View companies scheduled to participate.
