ITS responds to Bash bug

25 Sep 2014

Information technology services staff are taking steps to respond to a serious security vulnerability that could affect many UNIX-like operating systems including Linux, Mac OS X, NETBSD, Solaris and others. Microsoft Windows devices are not affected.  The vulnerability, in a common Unix program called Bash, is known as the Shellshock bug. It allows remote attackers to execute code to, for example, take over systems or access confidential information.

ITS is responding to this threat by:

  • Installing patches and workarounds on ISU central systems
  • Monitoring network traffic to identify attacks from off-campus and blocking them when feasible
  • Monitoring network traffic to identify systems on campus that have been exploited
  • Searching for on-campus systems that are vulnerable and alerting their administrators
  • Providing information and encouraging everyone to install patches to their systems as soon as possible

ITS staff said that almost any UNIX-based device exposed to the Internet -- including embedded devices like network attached storage units, webcams and routers -- is probably vulnerable in some way. They advise units running their own web servers to contact their vendor and apply updates immediately.  Those with Macs should apply software updates as soon as they are released. More information is available from the ITS site.
