Country singer Cody Jinks plans Nov. 12 concert at Stephens

Tickets for a Nov. 12 concert at Stephens Auditorium by country singer and songwriter Cody Jinks go on sale to the public at noon Friday, Oct. 15, via Ticketmaster. Jinks emerged as a solo artist in the mid-2000s.

'Tracing race' initiative seeks project proposals

The advisory group for the Tracing Race at Iowa State University initiative seeks proposals for digital projects that reveal the under-documented history of people of color's accomplishments and experiences, including the history of race, inequality, racism and activism on campus. Submissions are due Nov. 24 for expected work during spring semester 2022. The initiative is administered by the library's digital scholarship and initiatives department, which provides technical support and project management/coordination as needed.

Students (undergraduate or graduate) who submit proposals and serve as the project lead will be considered for $2,500 project awards, made possible by the Sanderson Family Library Assistantship fund. 

Grinnell faculty member looks at origins of curriculum violence

'Dancing with the Stars' tickets go on sale Oct. 8

Tickets for a Jan. 30 performance in Stephens Auditorium from the Dancing with the Stars live tour go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, via Ticketmaster. Tickets range from $59.50 to $89.50, with VIP packages (up to $575) also available.

Jon Carson, founder and managing partner of Trajectory Energy Partners, Chicago, will present "Energy Democracy: Driving Clean Energy Through Local Action" Oct. 12 (7 p.m. MU Great Hall), as part of the Iowa State Conference on Civility and Deliberative Democracy. On Oct. 13 (6-8 p.m., MU Sun Room), the Catt Center will host a workshop during which participants discuss U.S. energy choices while practicing the civic skills of deliberative democracy. Both events are open to the public; the Oct. 13 workshop requires registration.

Blood drive runs Oct. 4-7 in the MU

Weekly COVID-19 vaccination clinics for students continue through November

The  Thielen Student Health Center will offer free COVID-19 vaccination clinics for students through the end of November. Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccines will be available. Students should schedule an appointment online or by calling 515-294-5801, and bring their ISUCard with them to the clinic. Clinic hours during October and November are:

  • Monday-Tuesday 9 a.m.–noon, in the center's pharmacy

Pfizer booster shots are available for students who meet the CDC guidelines and received Pfizer for their primary vaccine series. Those who are eligible must wait at least six months after their primary vaccine (six months starts two weeks after second dose) before receiving a booster.

Cybersecurity fair is Oct. 8

As part of a week of outreach events, the Center for Cybersecurity Innovation and Outreach will cohost, with IT services, a cybersecurity fair Friday, Oct. 8 (9-11:30 a.m., first floor atrium, Durham Center). This open house will feature student clubs, demos and other attractions to inform the campus community about the importance of cybersecurity and how easy it is for our personal information to be exploited. Learn first-hand about password sniffing, identifying phishing emails and more. All faculty, staff and students are welcome.

Statewide 19th Amendment observance wraps up Oct. 4

The Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics will host the closing event of the "Hard Won, Not Done" 19th Amendment statewide centennial commemoration Oct. 4 (7 p.m., Benton Auditorium, Scheman Building). Keynote speaker Marjorie Spruill, author and distinguished professor emerita of history from the University of South Carolina, will present "Divided We Stand." The event is free and open to the public.

Jack-o'-lantern help sought Oct. 8-15 at Reiman Gardens

Reiman Gardens seeks volunteers Oct. 8-15 to stencil and carve pumpkins for its Oct. 16-17 "Spirits in the Gardens" event. Volunteers will draw designs on pumpkins with stencils Oct. 8-10 and carve stenciled pumpkins Oct. 13-15. The intent is to work outdoors if the weather allows. Tools are provided; volunteers must be 13 years old to carve. Volunteers must pre-register online; walk-ins can't be accepted this fall.

South end of Haber Road closed through Friday

From 8 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, through 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, Haber Road will be closed at the railroad underpass for road/sidewalk construction. The north end of the road at 13th Street will remain open for access to Frederiksen Court apartments and transportations services.

Fulbright welcome reception is Sept. 24

Free COVID vaccination clinics run for two more weeks

Iowa State is staffing free COVID-19 vaccination clinics for faculty, staff and students. Both the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) one-dose and Pfizer two-dose (fully approved Aug. 23 for individuals 16 years and older) vaccines are offered at these clinics. University leaders and the state Board of Regents strongly encourage all members of the university community to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Immunocompromised employees and students, for whom a third dose is approved, are welcome to receive their third dose at any of the campus vaccination clinics.

Appointments can be scheduled online and walk-ins are welcome. Students, faculty and staff should bring their red ISU card with them to the clinic. Further details and updates will be provided at www.care.iastate.edu.

Reserved tickets on sale for Spirits in the Gardens

Reiman Gardens is selling tickets (day- and entry time-specific) for its annual "Spirits in the Gardens" Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 16-17 (5-9 p.m.). Special events from 5 to 7 p.m. include Simon Says, magic show and presentations by the ISU SCUM (chemistry), juggling and unicycling, and cosplay student clubs. From 5 to 9 p.m., enjoy more than 1,000 carved jack-o-lanterns and a "candy factory." Tickets are $10 ($8 members and ISU students), $5 for youth (2-12 years) and free for children under two years. A jack-o-lantern only preview (no entertainment or treats) will be held Friday, Oct. 15 (7-9 p.m.). Register and purchase tickets online.

University closed Sept. 6 for national holiday

Women Impacting ISU calendar nominations due Sept. 24

The Catt Center is accepting nominations for its 2022 "Women Impacting ISU" calendar through Sept. 24. The calendar is open to all individuals who identify as a woman, inclusive of cisgender and transgender identities. Faculty and staff must be employed by the university for the 2022 calendar year to be eligible for nomination. Students graduating in May 2022 may be nominated. Nearly 1,000 lectures program recordings are digitized

University Library has completed a grant project to digitize and provide online access to 991 recordings from the ISU Lecture Series spanning the 1970s to 1990s. Lectures were selected for their significant cultural, historical and aesthetic value, as well as timeliness on topics our country is grappling with today. Accessible via Aviary platform, the lectures are captioned and can searched full text or synced with transcripts. 

Cyclone Cinema hits the 10-year mark

Cyclone Cinema, free screenings of recent box office films and open to the public, celebrates 10 years this fall with 13 weekends of movie watching. Films are shown nightly, Thursday through Sunday, in 101 Carver (7 p.m. start), and the Sunday screening includes English captioning. Concessions are available. Fall semester titles.

ClubFest has virtual, in-person and outdoor options this month

A virtual fall ClubFest and volunteer fair is live Aug. 30-Sept. 3 on Flipgrid. Use your Iowa State email and password to access the event. An in-person ClubFest will be held Wednesday, Sept. 8 (11 a.m.-4 p.m., multiple locations in and outside the Memorial Union). Morrill Road west of the MU, including the west parking loop, will be closed from 6:15 a.m. to 6 p.m. The two accessible parking stalls near the southwest corner of the MU will remain in use.

Presenters sought for girls STEM career conference

Proposals to present a session at the Go Further girls STEM conference this fall are being accepted through Friday, Sept. 10. During Go Further, female-identifying students in grades 8-10 learn about STEM fields and careers. In-person conferences will be held Thursday, Oct. 21 and Oct. 28. In-person session proposal form. A virtual conference will be held Saturday, Dec. 4.  Virtual session proposal form. Student health pauses Saturday, extended Monday service for fall

Due to staffing limitations, the Thielen Student Health Center will be unable to offer Saturday morning hours and the extended service hour on Monday during fall semester. Center staff apologize for the inconvenience and are committed to serving ISU students. Fall clinic hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

COVID-19 positive cases added to Moving Forward website

A "Campus COVID-19 Cases" item has been added to the right column of the Moving Forward website. Every Wednesday, the totals for the previous week will be updated. It features two numbers: Cases reported at Thielen Student Health Center and self-reports from students living in university housing and Greek housing.

Single tickets to Stephens events available now

Tickets to single events at Stephens Auditorium this year, including the 2021-22 performing arts series, are now on sale. The performing arts series includes musicals, comedy, orchestra and ensemble performances, Cirque shows and more. Subscription packages -- tickets for four or more performing arts series or Broadway series events at a 20% discount -- also are still available and feature other benefits for patrons. Tickets go on sale Oct. 15 for the Nutcracker Ballet performances in December.

New name: Memorial Union Student Engagement

The Student Activities Center in the Memorial Union has a new name, Memorial Union Student Engagement, effective Aug. 20. The name more accurately captures all the programs and services it provides, including leadership workshops, event authorization, late night alcohol-alternative programming, community service experiences, art exhibits, support and management for student organizations, and recreational activities like bowling and pottery painting. The name also helps to show that the programs and services it provides are sponsored, staffed and organized by the Memorial Union. MU poster sale runs Aug. 18-27

The Memorial Union's annual poster sale, featuring hundreds of designs, will be held in the Campanile Room Wednesday, Aug. 18, through Friday, Aug. 27. Sale hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m.-3 p.m weekends. Most posters are priced $8-$12, and proceeds from the sale support MU art programs.

Single-game football tickets on sale Aug. 18

Single-game football tickets are available at the Cyclone Athletics ticket office beginning Wednesday,  Aug. 18. Tickets can be purchased online at Cyclones.com or by phone at 294-1816. Tickets are available for five home games, but not the sold-out Sept. 11 game against Iowa.

Season ticket sales set a new school record of 48,000. The Cyclones begin their season Sept. 4, hosting Northern Iowa.

Comment deadline extended for digital access policy

The open comment period for a draft policy on digital accessibility has been extended and will now close Oct. 29 instead of Aug. 31. The draft policy calls for regularly reviewing and repairing existing materials, widespread training and -- by 2026 – establishes a requirement that all new digital content meet digital accessibility standards. Submit any comments on the proposed policy to policy@iastate.edu.

Paper towel composting expands at Vet Med

A pilot project testing paper towel composting in several bathrooms in the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center has expanded for the fall. The project, which began this spring in nine bathrooms in the animal hospital, places a second bin in bathrooms for discarding paper towels, which are then taken to the university's composting facility. Beginning Aug. 2, four additional hospital bathrooms and eight bathrooms in the College of Veterinary Medicine's main building also have compost bins. Building occupants in the expanded area have been notified and signs were placed in all the restrooms. Facilities planning and management will track the impact on trash production to evaluate the effectiveness of the initiative, said Ayodeji Oluwalana, FPM recycling and special events coordinator.

Senior VP Younger seeks students for advisory board

Senior vice president for student affairs Toyia Younger is seeking undergraduate and graduate students to serve on her 2021-22 Student Advisory Board. Student board members provide Younger critical feedback on campus related-events, programs and policies impacting the student experience at Iowa State University. Student board members meet monthly with Younger and engage in discussions online. Students interested in serving should apply by Aug. 27.

Celebration of Life for Hector Avalos is Aug. 15

A celebration of life for former professor of religious studies Hector Avalos will be held Sunday, Aug. 15 (1 p.m., Memorial Union Sun Room) and livestreamed. He died April 12 at age 62 after battling cancer. Avalos joined Iowa State's religious studies faculty in 1993 and founded the U.S. Latino/a studies program. In 1999, he co-founded the ISU Atheist and Agnostic Society, which primarily serves students who do not use religion as a way to live in this world. Obituary.

Iowa State will hold a COVID-19 vaccination clinic Aug. 17-20 (noon-3 p.m. daily, south gymnasium of State Gym, enter at the south doors), offering both the one-dose Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine and dose 1 of the 2-dose Pfizer vaccine (dose 2 will be available in a few weeks). Faculty, staff and students who would like to receive a vaccine, at no cost, are encouraged to make an appointment online or call 515-294-5801. Bring your ISU Card with you to your appointment. Update underway for guest Wi-Fi network

An update to the university's Wi-Fi network for guests will help campus visitors easily connect to the internet. To access IASTATE-Guest, users are required to agree to the university’s acceptable use policy. Once connected, access is available for 24 hours. At the end of 24 hours, the guest can request access again by agreeing to the terms and conditions for another 24 hours. Installation is underway and should be complete by Aug. 14.

Faculty, staff and students have access to Wi-Fi via the secure and encrypted Eduroam network, which requires Net-ID credentials. A second network, IASTATE, is used for devices, including gaming consoles, TVs and smart speakers. Devices on the IASTATE network must be registered. 

MU's art lending open house is Aug. 4-5

The Memorial Union is hosting its annual Art for Rent open house Wednesday, Aug. 4 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) and Thursday, Aug. 5 (10 a.m.-1 p.m.) in the Art Gallery on the ground floor. The art rental collection features about 275 framed posters, prints and paintings. They may be viewed during the open house and are available for rent for a full or half year, for office or home. Rentals typically range from $10 to $25 per year, and patrons may take selected pieces with them. Individuals don't have to be affiliated with Iowa State to participate. City-university rummage sale returns July 31-Aug. 7

The city of Ames and ISU's office of sustainability are sponsoring a fifth community rummage sale this summer at lease turnover time in the intermodal parking facility, 129 Hayward Ave. The intent is to help residents reuse and recycle household items and furniture, and reduce the volume going to a landfill. Sale and donation drop-off dates are July 31-Aug. 6 (Aug 7 is half-price day). July 30 is for drop-offs only. Volunteer registration closes July 25. Reminder: Data storage survey needs your input before Aug. 2

A storage advisory committee and IT units are conducting a survey regarding electronic data storage needs. It's open through Aug. 2. All members of the Iowa State community -- faculty, staff, students and researchers -- are invited to participate. The survey information will be used to shape a strategy for long-term electronic data storage at the university. Museums exhibitions are ending this month

The next few weeks are the last chance to see current university museums exhibitions at the Farm House Museum, Brunnier Art Museum and Christian Petersen Art Museum before they close so staff can prepare new exhibitions for fall. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $8. Farm House Museum and the Brunnier will be closed from July 24 through Aug. 22. CPAM, in Morrill Hall, will be closed from July 31 through Aug. 22.

New grad students with lab assignments: Register for safety training

Environmental health and safety will host a laboratory safety orientation session for new (fall 2021) graduate students working in a lab Aug. 12, 16, 18 or 19 at the EH&S Services Building. Register for one 4-hour session that provides the tools and hands-on skills you need to work safely in your laboratory. The orientation fulfills the three required safety trainings for general laboratory workers: Fire safety and fire extinguisher training, laboratory safety: core concepts, and emergency response training. Student ambassadors for vaccine information sought

Iowa State is participating in a campus COVID-19 vaccine campaign, part of Youth Marketing Connection's CoVAC Initiative, in partnership with American College Health Association and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. YMC is looking to hire 4-5 ISU students to serve as ambassadors to help combat vaccine misinformation and build vaccine confidence on campus. Interested students can create an account on The Hub, locate a position called campus COVID-19 ambassador, and apply.
