ISU community members invited to arts entrepreneurship conference

ISU's Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship will host the Society for Arts Entrepreneurship Education's annual conference Oct. 17-19. Over a day and a half, it includes five breakout sessions -- largley by faculty from other institutions who are teaching entrepreneurship to writers, artists, designers, musicians and performers -- and plenary talks by Distinguished Professor of English Debra Marquart and Iowa cartoonist Dave Carpenter. Registration is $165 ($39 for students), with 1-day registration options as well. A detailed conference schedule (PDF) is online.

Oct. 27 gala concert celebrates carillon and Stephens anniversaries

Tickets are on sale for the Oct. 27 "Bells of Iowa State" gala concert that will celebrate numerous anniversaries: Stephens Auditorium's 50th year, the Stanton Memorial Carillon's 120th year (and 65th year of the carillon foundation) and carillonneur Tin-Shi Tam's 25 years at Iowa State. The concert will feature the Stanton carillon, Iowa State Singers and alumni, ISU Symphony Orchestra and ISU Wind Ensemble. The new campanile-carillon model, designed by multidisciplinary ISU senior classes, also will be unveiled. Tickets for the 3 p.m. event in Stephens Auditorium are $25 (general admission on main floor, balcony; $10 students) or $50 (reserved). A $120 VIP option that includes a post-show dinner and presentation by Tam is available only at the Stephens ticket office. Proceeds will benefit the carillon foundation and promote the art of the carillon for future generations.

Open Cyclone basketball practices set for Oct. 4, 6

The Cyclone men's and women's basketball teams will open a practice to the public in Hilton Coliseum on Oct. 4 and 6, respectively. Seating for both sessions will be in sections 101-106 and 131-142, essentially the south and west sides of the court. Each practice will be followed by an autograph session with team members on Hilton's outer south concourse. Basketball schedule posters will be available, or fans may bring in a single item for autographs. To keep the line moving, no photos with players will be allowed. The athletics department's clear bag policy will be enforced.

  • Men's team practice: Friday, Oct. 4, south doors open at 3:45 p.m., autograph session at 5 p.m.
  • Women's team practice: Sunday, Oct. 6, south doors open at 12:30 p.m., autograph session at 2 p.m.

Volunteers sought for family weekend Oct. 11-13

More than 1,300 guests will visit campus Oct. 11-13 for Cyclone Family Weekend. This student-led event is filled with opportunities for families to spend time with their students, learn more about Iowa State and enjoy our beautiful campus. An outstanding family is recognized as Iowa State Family of the Year. Family weekend registration has closed, but volunteers still are needed to help welcome families to campus. Volunteer slots are available on Saturday (10 a.m.-noon or 5-8 p.m.) and Sunday (8-11 a.m.), or a portion of these shifts. Register by Oct. 1 to participate in Honors freshman research program

Faculty interested in working with talented first-year students in their research during spring semester are invited to explore the First-Year Mentor Program. This Honors program opportunity matches students and faculty on the basis of mutual interests and specified skills. Students can be mentored directly by faculty or another member of the research team. To participate, register online by Tuesday, Oct. 1. Deadline for Borlaug poster abstracts extended to Sept. 30

Iowa State's Nutritional Sciences Council invites undergraduate and graduate students to enter poster abstracts in the Norman Borlaug Poster Competition and display, which will precede the annual Norman Borlaug Lecture on Monday, Oct. 14, in the Memorial Union. Abstracts should describe work related to world issues. Cash prizes of $200, $150 and $75 will be awarded in each student category. To enter, complete the online submission survey by 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30. Finalists for the poster competition will be selected from the abstract submissions. Questions may be directed to Whitney Baxter.

GIS earth observation event is Oct. 15; register now

Iowa State's GIS Facility will host Earth Observation Day to celebrate remote sensing and geographic information systems on Tuesday, Oct. 15 (10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 248 Durham Center). At 10:30 a.m., Peter Wolter, professor in natural resource ecology and management, will give a presentation on his research using remote sensing to measure forest stand structure and composition. A mapathon will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The first part (11-11:45 a.m.) will focus on improving the Iowa OpenStreetMap basemap, and the second part (11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) will focus on a humanitarian mapping project. All are welcome for part or all of the event; a pizza lunch will be provided for those who RSVP.

Fall textiles exhibit includes student, faculty and alumni work

The fall exhibit in the Textiles and Clothing Museum, Morrill Hall, showcases the work of apparel, merchandising and design program students, faculty and alumni. "By Design: Process-Production-Profession," which continues through Nov. 22, includes:

  • A selection of student-made projects from the museum's collection
  • Examples of student assignments from all course levels in the  program's design option
  • Personal design research and aesthetics by program faculty, graduate TAs and alumni working in apparel design-related professions

Help is available for hiring managers

In addition to staff recruiting specialists on service delivery teams, managers have additional training opportunities to assist with recruitment and hiring process. Courses that assist with interview preparation and techniques include an online session ("Interviewing Candidates") that can be viewed at any time, and an instructor-led session ("Behavior-Based Interviewing") scheduled on Nov. 14. Registration for both courses is available on Learn@ISU.

Next Cyclone Central tailgate is Oct. 5

Join Cyclone alumni and friends Saturday, Oct. 5 (8-10:30 a.m., ISU Alumni Center) for Cyclone Central prior to the football game against the TCU Horned Frogs. Mingle with friends and family and enjoy a cash bar, modern restrooms and indoor climate control. Admission is free; a catered breakfast (preregistration required by noon Oct. 2), cash bar and food trucks are available.

2020-21 Miller Faculty Fellowship proposals due Dec. 9

The Miller Faculty Fellowship program annually provides recipients with opportunities to enhance their scholarly work in undergraduate programs and develop innovative approaches to enhance student learning. Recipients have up to 12 months to meet their project goals. The deadline for proposals for the 2020-21 academic year is Monday, Dec. 9. Program and application details are online. Purchase four Cirque Mei tickets for $50

Cirque Mei, from China's Hebei province and featuring traditional and contemporary Chinese circus acts, stops at Stephens Auditorium Wednesday, Oct. 2 (7 p.m. curtain). Four tickets for $50 can be purchased in person at the Stephens ticket office (weekdays noon-6 p.m.) through show time. This offer does not apply to previous purchases.

Learn about deaf culture and language

Dina Toulan, lecturer in world languages and cultures, will present "American Sign Language: Deaf Culture and Language," in a series of brown bag lunches beginning Oct. 4 (11 a.m.-noon, MU Gallery). Employees and community members will learn about deaf culture, including instruction in some sign language basics. Additional sessions on Oct. 11, 18 and 25 each will have unique content.

P&S conference proposals are due Oct. 4

The Professional and Scientific Council Professional Development Conference subcommittee is seeking presenters -- and recommendations for presenters -- for the 2020 conference, to be held Feb. 13. The conference focuses on the personal and professional development of P&S employees in the areas of leadership, health and wellness, professional resources and human interactions.

If you want to share your expertise on a topic you think P&S employees will benefit from learning about, consider being a presenter. If you would like to recommend a colleague to present on a topic, make sure that person is either an ISU employee or affiliated with ISU. All individuals -- whether proposing a presentation or recommending a presenter -- are asked to complete the online form by 5 p.m. Oct. 4. The subcommittee will review all submissions and announce its selections by Nov. 1.

Alumnus to present leadership lecture

Jim Knuth, a 1984 ISU alumnus and senior vice president for Farm Credit Services of America, will present the 2019 William K. Deal Endowed Leadership Lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 2 (7:30 p.m., Curtiss auditorium). Knuth, who heads the organizations's Iowa retail financial services division, will present "Lessons in Leadership and Life." His talk is free and open to the public.

cyBUY supplier show is Oct. 3

Procurement Services will host its 2019 cyBUY Supplier Show on Thursday, Oct. 3 (10 a.m.-2 p.m., MU Great Hall and Oak Room). Faculty and staff are invited to meet several cyBUY suppliers and register to win some amazing prizes. Questions about the show may be directed to the cyBUY team.

Register for lunch and learn with creator of #WhyIStayed hashtag

Beverly Gooden, victims rights advocate and creator of the fall 2014 viral hashtag #WhyIStayed on Twitter, will visit campus Oct. 15-16 at the invitation of Iowa State's Green Dot program. Her public lecture, "Why I Stayed," begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the Memorial Union Sun Room. A reception follows. Gooden will lead a lunch and learn Wednesday, Oct. 16 (10 a.m.-1 p.m., MU Campanile Room) for faculty, staff, administrators and community agency leaders. It will focus on supporting student survivors of violence. Attendance is limited to 60 people; register online.

Appointments available for student landscape sessions on Oct. 6

ISU's Landscape Club will host its 4th Student Design Sessions on Sunday, Oct. 6 (noon-3:30 p.m., Horticulture Hall). Students in the club will consult with homeowners to give design advice and plant recommendations, and draw rough elevation sketches over the top of pictures of the home. The hour-long sessions are $65 by appointment only; email iastatelandscape@gmail.com to schedule a session. Proceeds will support the club's spring break trip to the National Collegiate Landscape Competition at Michigan State University.

Workday user labs planned for job management support

Human resources and student financial aid staff will hold two user labs this month to give hands-on Workday help to staff in job management support roles. Job management support staff can help process transactions related to temporary employees, such as hiring and separating student workers, including those in work study positions. The user labs are 2-4 p.m. Sept. 18 and 25 in 116 Durham Center.  

Dancing With the Stars tour returns to Stephens

Dancing With the Stars Live will tour this winter, with a stop at Stephens Auditorium scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2020 (7:30 p.m.). Tickets, ranging from $59.50 to $79.50 (with other VIP options) will go on sale to the public at noon Monday, Sept. 23, through Ticketmaster.

Tickets go on sale at noon Friday, Sept. 20, for two just-announced performances at Stephens Auditorium. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster, including the Stephens ticket office (noon-6 p.m. Monday-Friday).

Focus grants support student creativity; apply by Oct. 1

The Focus committee has issued a call for grant proposals. Student artists, writers and performers can apply for up to $600 for creative projects done outside the classroom. Proposals are due Oct. 1. Focus grants are sponsored by the Memorial Union and funded by Student Government. More information, including application instructions, is online. Past projects include visual art, poetry readings, dance, drama, music, chap books and apparel design.

Call for student art for MU exhibition

The Memorial Union is issuing a call for Iowa State student artwork. Up to three pieces in any media may be submitted for consideration for the 2019 Studies in Creativity Exhibit (Oct. 10-Dec. 8, MU Gallery, reception at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17). Students may submit entries online through Sept. 26 at www.mu.iastate.edu/exhibits. Juror Mary Jones of Indianola, a 2018 Iowa Arts Council fellow, will select approximately 40 pieces for the show. Questions may be emailed to Letitia Kenemer.

Child care scholarships available for student parents

ISU Child Care & Family Services is accepting applications for the Childcare Assistance Program (CAP). This scholarship program is available to both graduate and undergraduate student parents who have out-of-pocket costs for child care services. Eligible student parents may receive up to $750 per semester. Students with the highest financial need receive priority consideration. Documentary film series complements U.S. Latino/a program anniversary

As part of its 25-year anniversary observance, the U.S. Latino/a program in the world languages and cultures department is hosting a documentary film festival on Thursday evenings, Sept. 19-Oct. 10 (6 p.m. weekly, 198 Parks Library). After each showing, a faculty member will lead a Q&A session. Admission is free. The scheduled documentaries are:

Game day traffic on I-35

The Iowa DOT offers a few suggestions for football fans driving to Ames for the Cyclone-Hawkeye game Sept. 14 (3 p.m.). Drivers arriving from the south on I-35 will use the new flyover bridge to go west on U.S. Highway 30 into Ames. Drivers arriving from the north are encouraged to exit I-35 at 13th Street (exit 113) to arrive in Ames. Motorists on the flyover bridge are reminded they will be merging onto Highway 30 with traffic heading west from both southbound I-35 and Nevada.

I-35 flyover bridge could open Thursday morning

The Iowa Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that the northbound I-35 to westbound U.S. Highway 30 flyover bridge is scheduled to open to traffic Thursday morning, Sept. 12, weather permitting. Final preparations necessary to open the bridge require dry pavement, but the goal is to open the bridge in time for Thursday morning's commute.

MU's bridal expo is Sept. 22

The Memorial Union's event planning staff will host the facility's first bridal expo in eight years on Sunday, Sept. 22 (11 a.m.-2 p.m.). United at the Union is free and open to the public. ClubFest postponed to Sept. 13

ClubFest, originally scheduled for Sept. 11 on central campus, has been moved to the Memorial Union Great Hall on Friday, Sept. 13, due to anticipated weather conditions. The event, which showcases many of Iowa State's 900-plus student groups and organizations, runs from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. Displays, demonstrations and giveaways will be available for students interested in getting involved on campus.

You're invited: Campus summit addressing sexual misconduct

Iowa State faculty, staff and community partners are invited to the 2nd Campus Summit Addressing Sexual Misconduct on Friday, Sept. 27 (7:30 a.m.-noon, Scheman Building), hosted by the dean of students office. The summit is an opportunity to review policy, processes and support mechanisms at Iowa State and in the Ames community to build staff's capacity to support those impacted by sexual violence and gender-based discrimination. Attendees will engage in large and small group dialogues. More information, including registration, is online.

Cyclone Aide recruiting runs through Oct. 13

New Student Programs is recruiting students for the 2020 Cyclone Aide cohort. Cyclone Aides assist new students in their transition to Iowa State during orientation and Destination Iowa State while serving as ambassadors for both their college and university and gaining professional development. Faculty and staff are asked to encourage engaged students to serve as Cyclone Aides. They also may nominate students for this paid leadership role by emailing McKenzie Reierson. The application and position description are online. Applications are due Oct. 13.

Bob Dylan will play at Stephens Oct. 23

Tickets for an Oct. 23 concert in Stephens Auditorium by Bob Dylan and his band go on sale at noon Friday, Sept. 13, via Ticketmaster or bobdylan.com. Tickets are $65 or $89.50. Students with a valid I.D. who purchase tickets at the Stephens ticket office can save $25. The concert begins at 8 p.m.

Study Abroad Fair is Sept. 19

Learn about interning, studying and volunteering abroad in experiences ranging from one week to one year at the Study Abroad Fair Thursday, Sept. 19 (10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., MU Great Hall). Students can enter their names for a chance to win study-abroad scholarships. Undergrad and graduate students interested in applying for a competitive national award or scholarship should pay attention to upcoming campus deadlines:

  • Goldwater Scholarship: Oct. 21
  • NSF Graduate Research Fellowships Program: late October (dates vary by field)
  • Truman Scholarship: Nov. 4
  • Udall Scholarship: Nov. 18

Goldwater, Truman and Udall applicants should complete this application. Students finalizing a personal statement or essay are advised to visit writing consultant Kristin Terrill in ISU's Center for Communication Excellence. President's annual address is Sept. 11

President Wendy Wintersteen will discuss university priorities and challenges for the coming year during her annual address, "Writing the Next Chapter of Innovation and Excellence," Wednesday, Sept. 11 (4 p.m., MU Great Hall). All are invited to attend or watch the livestream.

Call for nominations for national student scholarships

The University Honors program, which also coordinates nominations for nationally competitive student awards, seeks nominations for competitive national fellowships and scholarships. Faculty and staff are encouraged to submit names of outstanding advisees or students, and Honors staff will contact each nominator to discuss opportunities that might be a fit. The campus deadlines for awards are:

  • NSF Graduate Research Fellowships Program: late October (varies by field)

New faculty research orientation is Sept. 13

The time commitment is roughly 15-20 minutes per week. Campustown scavenger hunt begins Friday

On Fridays during September, ISU students are invited to use the scavenger hunt mobile app Scavify to receive special discounts and earn points toward eligibility for bigger prizes from campustown businesses and organizations. 'Fridays Around Campustown' is hosted by a different partner organization each week during the month to welcome students to Ames.

Fall sale in gardens' gift shop is Sept. 13-15

Reiman Gardens will hold a fall sale in its gift shop Friday-Sunday, Sept. 13-15. Shoppers receive a 30% discount on all merchandise, including home decor, kids' toys, yard ornaments, clothing, jewelry and Cyclone gear -- and they don't pay gardens admission. All sales directly benefit Reiman Gardens.

Tearoom will reopen Sept. 17

The Joan Bice Underwood Tearoom, 23 MacKay, will reopen for the 2019-20 academic year on Tuesday, Sept. 17, and serve lunch Tuesday-Friday (11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m.). Menus and prices are online. Groups of four or fewer diners may book via the OpenTable app on the tearoom website; groups of five or more diners may make a reservation by calling 294-3330.The tearoom is a hands-on classroom/restaurant operation for students in the Hospitality Management 380 course. Cash, check and credit cards are accepted.
