Lucas Heitkamp joined the staff in the office of the president July 7 as associate director of federal relations. He works with senior advisor to the president and director of federal relations Sophia Magill to:
- Further develop university relationships with the federal government.
- Advance the university's federal priorities and strengthen its contributions to national initiatives.
- Share federal policy opportunities with the university community.
For nearly five years, Heitkamp worked on the staff of U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds, South Dakota. Most recently, he served as a legislative assistant in the Washington, D.C., office, specializing in energy, agriculture, natural resources and appropriations policy. Previously, he worked as a legislative aide and constituent services representative in Rounds' office.
The Sioux Falls native earned a bachelor's degree in history and master's degree in political history, both from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion.
