Submit comments on provost finalists by noon Monday

The search for Iowa State's next executive vice president and provost edges toward a conclusion. By week's end, all three finalists will have completed campus interviews.

Two finalists -- Jonathan Wickert and David Manderscheid -- interviewed and presented at open forums earlier in the week. Carlo Montemagno is on campus now and will speak at a Friday morning forum (10:45 a.m., Memorial Union Gallery).

"The first two open forums this week have been very well attended," said Wendy Wintersteen, search committee chair and dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. "We’ve appreciated the campus community's involvement, from the nomination process to participating in the campus visits.

"We encourage everyone to turn out for our third candidate on Friday, and to submit comments for all candidates through the online evaluation site by noon on Monday, April 30."

Wintersteen said the search committee will meet late Monday to assess the finalist interviews and review submitted online comments. The committee will provide a summary to president Steven Leath, who will make the final decision.

Missed a forum?

Video of all three candidate forums will be available on the provost search website, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Submitting evaluations

Evaluations of finalists should be submitted by noon, April 30, via an online form. People's identities, including their email addresses or Net-IDs, will not be associated with any comments made on evaluations.

Presidential installation set for Sept. 14

The celebratory installation of Steven Leath as Iowa State's 15th president will take place Friday morning, Sept. 14. The event will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in Stephens Auditorium and will be followed immediately by a reception.

"Invitations will be sent out closer to the event," said Olivia Madison, chair of the presidential installation planning committee and dean of the library. "But we wanted to get this date on everyone's calendar. We hope faculty and staff will join us in the celebration and encourage colleagues, friends and students to experience this historic event."

Other installation events on Sept. 13 will include:

  • A student celebration (noon-2 p.m., central campus)
  • A public lecture by Erskine Bowles, former president of the University of North Carolina system and White House chief of staff for Bill Clinton (8 p.m., location will be announced). Mr. Bowles will also formally introduce President Leath during his installation ceremony.

Faculty P&T, Design reorganization among ISU items on regents agenda

Promotion and tenure awards for 68 Iowa State faculty members, an administrative reorganization of the College of Design, parking permit rates for next year, a Lagomarcino remodel for the new School of Education and numerous annual reports to the board – including student retention and student financial aid – are on the agenda when the state Board of Regents meets Thursday at the University of Northern Iowa.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue through the afternoon. A live audio stream of the meeting is available on the board's website.

The board also will elect a president and president pro-tem to two-year terms. President Craig Lang and president pro-tem Bruce Rastetter's terms end April 30.

Additionally, the board will receive an oral report on the student-led "Universities for a Better Iowa" efforts this spring. Representatives of non-unionized employee groups will be given a few minutes to speak to the board about salary issues. At its June 6 meeting, the board will consider salary policies for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Pomp and circumstance

command

For the first time in almost a decade, the Air Force ROTC Cadet Change of Command Ceremony and Spring Pass in Review Parade, held April 19 in the Forker Building gymnasium, was open to the campus community.

The event marks the official transfer of command from the outgoing to the incoming cadet wing commander, who is the top senior-level cadet charged with ensuring the training, mentoring and operations of the Air Force ROTC detachments. Holding a summer youth program? Registration deadline looms

By this fall, Iowa State will have a new policy setting out safety standards for any university program -- academic, athletic or recreational -- involving youth who are under 18 years old.

In the meantime, university units or affiliates offering a youth camp or pre-collegiate program this summer must:

  1. Register the program with the Office of Risk Management (use Youth Program Registration [PDF] or Youth Program Registration-Third Party [PDF]). Deadline for registration is May 7 for programs starting before July 1 and June 1 for programs beginning July 1 or after.
  2. Copy the registration to chairs and deans.
  3. Submit a background check request form (PDF)  to the Office of University Counsel.  Upon receipt of the form from university-sponsored programs, university counsel will screen volunteers and employees against the sex offender registry.  University-endorsed or third-party programs are responsible for their own background checks. (People on the sex offender registry cannot assist with youth programs.)
  4. Develop a protocol to assure first aid is available to camp participants.

The Youth Camps and Pre-Collegiate Programs website provides more information and links to other forms.

School's out, road construction begins

concrete

Campus road work beginning next week will replace deteriorating sections of concrete. Submitted photo.

Summer = road construction in the upper Midwest, including the Iowa State campus. Starting Wednesday, May 2, and – weather permitting – wrapping up the first week in August, crews will remove and replace deteriorating sections of concrete on these campus roads (PDF), largely on the east and north sides of campus:

  • Beach Road between Lincoln Way and Wallace Road
  • Wallace Road between Beach Road and University Boulevard
  • University Boulevard between Wallace and Stange roads
  • Stange Road between University Boulevard and Squaw Creek
  • Union Drive in front of the Thielen Student Health Center
  • Union Drive in front of the Memorial Union
  • Intersection of Union Drive and Wallace Road

Additionally, the section of Union Drive from Lincoln Way to College Creek will receive an overlay of asphalt.

First up

The work will require lane closures, but two-directional traffic will be maintained. In some cases, the sidewalk adjacent to the road also will be replaced. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to observe signs advising them how to navigate the area.

Work will begin May 2 with the eastbound lanes of University Boulevard (in front of the horse barns) and then move to the westbound lanes, said Mike Parsons, construction manager in facilities planning and management. Subsequent components will be scheduled around campus activities and special events, including Special Olympics, new student orientation and Odyssey of the Mind.

The concrete replacement is part of the university's 2012 pavement preservation plan. Institutional Roads funds, university funds and utility repair funds will cover the $910,000 cost.

Student project casts a blue hue

Design's blue hue

The blue hue emanating from the east face of the College of Design last week was the work of Adam Covington, a senior majoring in landscape architecture and speech communication.

Covington's light installation was part of an independent study honors project aimed at using light to define and transform the College of Design.

Covington worked with Pam Iasevoli, associate professor of interior design, over the past two semesters to develop a display of more than 60 fluorescent blue lights. The lights were installed April 15 and remained up during Veishea week.

Last shot at the Tigers

tori

Junior pitcher/outfielder Tori Torrescano (pictured) and her Cyclone teammates welcome the No. 10 Missouri Tigers to town this weekend for a final Big 12 Conference series between the two schools. Games begin Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at noon, all at the Southwest Athletics Complex.

Last weekend in Lawrence, Kan., Torrescano hit her 12th home run of the year, setting a new school record for home runs in a single season. With 39 RBIs, she also is one away from tying that Cyclone single-season record.
