Poinsettia sale is Dec. 4-7
Students in the horticulture club will sell poinsettias Dec. 4-7 (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) at a different campus location daily (see below). A variety of colors and two sizes are available: 6" pot ($15), and 10" pot ($35). Proceeds from the sale support club activities, including contest expenses and student experiences. Art Mart in the MU is Dec. 5-7
The Workspace will host Art Mart, an annual art sale at the Memorial Union, Dec. 5-7 in the Campanile Room. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday (during WinterFest) and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Find one-of-a-kind gifts made locally by the Workspace's community of artists, including blown glass vessels, ornaments and sculpture from the ISU Gaffer's Guild; pottery, jewelry, paintings and prints. Back by popular demand, mystery boxes will be filled with unique treasures donated by participating artists.
Santa will host two breakfasts in the gardens Dec. 14
Reiman Gardens offers two opportunities for kids (and their parents) to enjoy a breakfast buffet with Santa Saturday, Dec. 14 (8 and 10 a.m.). Children are invited to visit with Santa, send a letter to the North Pole, create a holiday craft and enjoy the train exhibit in the conservatory. Registration and prepayment are due Dec. 8; tickets are $9 for youth and $14 for adults ($7 for member or ISU student youth, $12 for member or ISU student adults). Register for 8 a.m. seating. Register for 10 a.m. seating.
Women of Achievement nominations due Nov. 29
The Ames-ISU YWCA is accepting nominations through 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, for its annual Women of Achievement Award. The award recognizes Story County-area women -- professionals, volunteers, students -- who actively foster the empowerment of women or assist in the reduction/elimination of racism. Nomination information and forms are online; questions may be directed to Angela Merrick, 294-0043.
Learn@ISU site maintenance scheduled for Nov. 25
The Learn@ISU training website will be unavailable after 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, for scheduled maintenance to the database servers. During maintenance, faculty, students and staff will not be able to access the system. Maintenance will be completed Monday night, and Learn@ISU will be available at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26.
Recognize a P&S colleague with a CYtation award
Nominations for Professional and Scientific Council CYtation Awards are being accepted through Dec. 1. Four different awards recognize an employee or employees for a job well done: CYtation Award, Woodin CYtation Award, Team CYtation Award, and Outstanding New Professional and Scientific Council Member CYtation Award. A detailed explanation of each, including who is eligible and nomination instructions, is available on the P&S Council website.
Reminder: CyThx nomination deadline is Nov. 30
The recognition initiative CyThx, now in its second year, concludes Nov. 30 as a way to anwer "Who makes you feel like a valued member of the ISU community?" Faculty, graduate teaching assistants, mentors, advisers, colleagues and others are eligible to be recognized. Use the online submission form, and all who are recognized will receive an email and acknowledgement on the CyThx website between Dec. 26 and Jan. 10.
CyThx is a joint effort of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, learning communities, Graduate and Professional Student Senate, office of multicultural student affairs and Student Government.
Library and bookstore seek student savings
The ISU Book Store and the University Library are on the same page concerning affordable course content, a collaborative effort that isn't typical on college campuses.
Meet student regent Zack Leist
While one could argue he represents the 75,128 students at Iowa's three public universities, Iowa State junior Zack Leist sees it as "a huge honor" to serve 3.1 million Iowans as the student member of the state Board of Regents.
Campus climate updates are available online
Campus climate news and updates are now available on the campus climate website. The site also includes an overview of the incident reporting system, resources for support and link to the online incident reporting form.
Transportation services moves kiosks inside
Transportation services' larger kiosks are now open inside its building. The expanded space features two kiosk boxes with a capacity of 224 sets of keys and two kiosk computers. The right kiosk dispatches compact and midsize cars, hybrids, electric cars and minivans. The left kiosk holds the keys for trucks, cargo vans, 15-passenger vans and all SUVs. The climate-controlled space is open 24/7, including weekends and holidays for pickups and returns.
Food prize seeks spring design interns
The World Food Prize Foundation in Des Moines is accepting applications for two graphic design interns for spring (Jan. 13-May 26, 2020, with option to stay on through the summer). The minimum commitment is 15 hours per week. Interns will support the director of communications and events with duties such as print design and layout, photo editing, website content and design, and updating and maximizing social media sites. The internship is unpaid, but students may be eligible for course credit. More information, including qualifications and application guidelines, is online.
Exhibit planned in MU Nov. 15 for America Recycles Day
Join ISU recycling services and Student Government’s sustainability committee in celebrating America Recycles Day on Nov. 15. An interactive display with information, games and prizes focused on Iowa State’s zero waste program and its reduce, reuse, and recycling initiatives will be available 10 a.m.-2 p.m. outside the ISU Book Store in the Memorial Union.
Ice cream sale features fall flavors
The Dairy Science Club's ice cream sale today (Nov. 13, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., near the north doors of Lush Auditorium in Kildee Hall) features fall favorites pumpkin spice and caramel apple, as well as the popular vanilla, triple chocolate, Heath caramel, Oreo and Reeses. The price is $2 for an 8-oz. cup.
Reminder: Benefits enrollment closes Nov. 22
After employees make their benefits elections in Workday for calendar year 2020 but before they submit them, a summary screen will show their coverage choices. Employees may submit changes throughout the open enrollment period (Nov. 1-22), and when enrollment closes at 5 p.m. Nov. 22, the last changes submitted will be processed and are final. Due to the transparency of this process in Workday, there is no need for employees to complete a post-enrollment review, as was done in the past. Questions? Forums scheduled for student wellness director finalists
Candidate open forums are planned for three finalists in the search for a Student Wellness director. Housed in the division of student affairs, the director will develop, coordinate and oversee a campus-wide student wellness program that includes mental health/counseling services and financial health. More information, including candidate resumes and evaluation sheets, are available on the student affairs search website. The forums will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in 0185 State Gym. Gardens gift shop open house runs Nov. 23-25
Reiman Gardens gift shop will hold its holiday open house Saturday-Monday, Nov. 23-25 (9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. daily). Enjoy 30% off all regularly priced merchandise. You don't have to pay gardens admission to visit the gift shop. Because the Cyclone football team plays at home Nov. 23, shoppers won't be able to use the gardens' parking lots that day.
Nutcracker ballet tickets are on sale
The state's longest-running production of the Nutcracker Ballet, at Stephens Auditorium, will be presented at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15. Tickets are $30 ($25 for youth, seniors and groups of 10 or more), and available via Ticketmaster, including the Stephens ticket office. The performances feature local talent, with professional dancers in the principal roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her cavalier.
Nov. 15 is faculty-staff appreciation day at the bookstore
Faculty and staff can save 8% on select Apple computers and iPads during a one-day event in the ISU Book Store Friday, Nov. 15. Details and preorder info are online. Lab space offers digital accessibility tools
A new digital accessibility lab opened this week in the Durham Center, giving students who have disabilities a space to find a wide vareity of assistive technology.
Leaders approve interim policy for chalking on campus
The interim policy takes effect Nov. 11. University administrators plan to work with Student Government to explore a permanent chalking policy.
Professional development funds available for term faculty
The office of the senior vice president and provost has funds to support professional development of term faculty, particularly faculty without access to professional development support from their departments. Awards up to $500 help faculty attend a conference, workshop or training. Guidelines are online and applications (online) are due Dec. 1 for conferences or workshops between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2020. The submission process has been updated. Recipients will be notified within three weeks. Abstracts for conference presentations need not have been accepted at the time an application is submitted.
Feedback sought on library's scholarship services
The University Library digital scholarship and initiatives unit is conducting an online survey of faculty, P&S staff, graduate students and post-docs to assess their involvement, interests and future needs relating to scholarship activities at ISU. The responses provided will assist the unit in developing services, training and outreach to the ISU community and inform library efforts to support future scholarship. An email invitation was sent Nov. 5 that includes a link to the survey, which should take 8-10 minutes to complete. Participation is voluntary. All responses will be treated confidentially and results will be reported in summary form without identifying individual responses. Nominations open for Ivy Women in Business Awards
The Ivy College of Business is accepting nominations for its third annual Ivy Women in Business Awards until Jan. 10, 2020. These awards celebrate women in business and their champions, and are an opportunity to inspire female students as they prepare for a future in business. Nominations must be submitted online.
Reminder: Snowblower service days are Nov. 8-9
The Agriculture Systems Technology Club will hold its snowblower service days Friday-Saturday, Nov. 8 (1-6 p.m.) and 9 (8 a.m.-1 p.m.) on the west side of Sukup Hall. The $25 fee includes oil, grease, sparkplug and gas; not major repairs. Snowblowers must be dropped off during service hours, or club members will pick up and deliver in Ames for an additional $15. Reception for term faculty is Dec. 5
The provost's office will host a reception honoring the accomplishments and contributions of Iowa State's term faculty on Thursday, Dec. 5 (5-7 p.m., Reiman Gardens). Alumni will present exhibition talk Nov. 10
Alumni Jennifer Flack Jones and Beth Kamienski Haskins will share their post-graduation experiences in the apparel industry and as designers of handcrafted wearables and home décor products during a public talk Sunday, Nov. 10 (1-2 p.m., 2019 Morrill). The related exhibition, "By Design: Process -- Production -- Profession," will be open in the Textiles and Clothing Museum's Mary Alice Gallery, 1015 Morrill, following the lecture. Refreshments will be served.
Online auction for United Way runs Nov. 4-8
The division of operations and finance is sponsoring an online auction benefiting the United Way of Story County Monday, Nov. 4 (8 a.m.) through noon Friday, Nov. 8. Bid items include Cyclone football and volleyball tickets, parking space near Beardshear, ISU corn hole toss game, and ISU pool ball sets.
