Paving projects will close U.S. 69 south of Ames

Iowa State employees and students who commute to campus from the south are alerted that two Iowa DOT road projects will close numerous sections of U.S. Highway 69 between Ankeny and Ames, beginning May 4 and continuing into August, weather-dependent.

Meet your P&S Council representatives on May 13

The Professional and Scientific Council invites all P&S staff to a meet and greet on May 13 (3-5 p.m., Harl Commons, Curtiss Hall). This is a chance for P&S employees to meet their council representatives. Refreshments will be served, including ice cream from the ISU Dairy Science Club and snacks from ISU Dining. A variety of door prizes also will be given away. No preregistration is required to attend. 

Movie night at Jack Trice Stadium is May 16

The Jr. Cyclone Club is sponsoring the third annual Movie Night at Jack Trice Stadium on May 16 (7 p.m.; northeast, east and northwest gates open at 6 p.m.). The film is Big Hero 6 and will be shown on the north video board. Admission is free and open to the public. Seating is in the east bleachers or on the field (blankets only). Wheelchairs are welcome on the asphalt tarmacs. Limited concessions will be available for purchase. In case of rain, the movie will be shown at Hilton Coliseum. 

Student groups are part of big plant sale on May 9-10

ISU's Graduate Student Horticulture Society and Horticulture Club are among the sponsors of a "Plant Sale Extravaganza" in the Reiman Gardens parking lot May 9 (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) and May 10 (10 a.m.-3 p.m.). Reiman Garden members may buy during a pre-sale on May 8 (3-7 p.m.). Plants to be sold include trees, shrubs, roses (including Buck varieties), perennials such as daylilies and peonies, ground covers, rhubarb, mixed hanging baskets, annual vegetables and more. Accepted forms of payment are credit card, check and cash. All purchases directly benefit each group's programming.

Youth program leader training is May 13

The offices of risk management, conference planning and management, and ISU Extension and Outreach are hosting training for youth program leaders, administrators and student organization officers on May 13 (2-4 p.m., 1020 Extension 4-H Building). The training will cover the policies, procedures and forms necessary to conduct youth programs at Iowa State. Preregistration is required. To register, email orm@iastate.edu by May 12. 

Volunteers needed for Special Olympics games

Special Olympics Iowa is seeking up to 500 volunteers for its annual summer games, held on campus May 21-23. Volunteer duties include escorts, parking, awards and more. A full list of volunteer positions and descriptions can be found at www.soiowa.org. Half-day shifts are available; registration is online. In Motion dance performances are May 1-2

Co'Motion Dance Theater's Women in Motion will perform "The Mystery of Water" May 1-2 to conclude the group's semester-long dance workshop. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Ames City Auditorium on Sixth Street. Tickets, available at the door, are $15 (seniors and students $10). Co'Motion is in residence in the ISU Dance program.

ROTC students receive governor's award

Two Iowa State students -- seniors Tanner Hildebrand and Matthew Sindelar recently received the ROTC Governor's Cup Award  for "leadership, academics and military achievement." They were among 10 students  receiving the awards from Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds. The awards are presented annually to top students in ten ROTC programs at seven Iowa colleges and universities.

Several ideas for reducing congestion and improving safety on Osborn Drive are under discussion. Before settling on a solution, university planners want to hear from faculty, staff and students who frequently use Osborn.  If you have comments or ideas, please submit them via this two-question online survey.

Regents approve 2015-16 P&T list

Meeting Thursday afternoon in Council Bluffs, the state Board of Regents approved 2015-16 faculty promotion and tenure awards at the three regent universities. At Iowa State, 70 faculty received promotion and/or tenure. The awards take effect July 1 for A-base (12-month appointment) faculty and Aug. 16 for B-base (nine-month) faculty.

Parking permit renewal system should be working now

Many of those trying to renew their parking permits Thursday morning may been stymied by server issues. The system appears to be back in service now.

Summer youth fitness program serves K-6 students

Registration is open for the kinesiology department's summer youth fitness program, which runs June 8-July 30 (1:10-4:30 p.m. Mondays thru Thursdays, Forker Building). The program serves students in kindergarten through grade 6; the emphasis is on children experiencing many types of physical activity, including team sports, games, swimming, gymnastics and creative movement. Teachers are kinesiology education majors. The cost is $350 with discounts for subsequent children. More information, including the registration packet, is online. The summer youth fitness program is celebrating 30 years this summer.

Open access publishing is focus of April 15 librarians forum

The scholarly communication team in the University Library hosted about 80 college and university library staff April 15 for a discussion of publishing models in which research data and results are accessible. The day was a stop on the Scholarly Communication Roadshow coordinated by the Association of College and Research Libraries. Advances in digital scholarship, copyright, reuse and collection development were some of the topics addressed. Part of the scholarly communication team's mission is to initiate discussion with researchers and streamline the publication of scholarship via ISU's Digital Repository.

Winning pieces from fashion show go on exhibit April 30

The first and second place student designs from this month's 2015 Fashion Show will be on exhibit in the Textile and Clothing Museum's Mary Alice Gallery April 30-July 31 (11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, 1015 Morrill). The gallery also will be open on commencement Saturday, May 9, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. An opening reception will be held Wednesday, April 29 (5:30-6:30 p.m., in the gallery).

Change of command ceremony is today

Experience the sights (and sounds) of the ROTC Tri-Service Change of Command and parade on central campus today at 4 p.m. ISU's three programs -- Army, Navy and Air Force -- will be changing out their cadet or midshipmen commanders for the upcoming fall semester. Participants will be outfitted in military dress uniforms. The public is invited to attend. Rain location is in the Lied Center.

Honors poster presentation/reception is April 29

The University Honors Program's spring poster presentation and reception will be held Wednesday, April 29 (3-5 p.m., MU Great Hall). Spring and summer 2015 Honors graduates, as well as other Honors students, will be present to answer questions and speak with individuals interested in their capstone projects.

Comfort dogs return to Parks Library April 27-May 1

The University Library has arranged for comfort dogs to play with students from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday, April 27-May 1 (dead week). Students are welcome to stop by 192 Parks Library and visit with some furry friends. Numerous breeds will be present, including golden retrievers, wirehaired pointers, dachshunds and others. Now in its third semester, the University Library seeks your help in naming this event; details and contest rules are on the library's Facebook page.

ROTC units will run campus route April 23

Step outside Thursday afternoon, April 23, to watch (and hear) Iowa State's ROTC units run through campus, beginning at 4 p.m. An estimated 300 student platoon members from the Army, Navy and Air Force ROTC will follow a two-mile, 20-minute route that will begin and end on the south side of The Armory. The route travels counter-clockwise along Bissell Road, Union Drive, Wallace Road and Osborn Drive, with a sidewalk detour by the Campanile, Curtiss and Beardshear halls at the midway point. A police escort will accompany the units. Spectators are encouraged to wear patriotic colors and wave flags.

Alumni association's Inspiration Awards reception is May 29

The ISU Alumni Association will recognize its 2015 Faculty-Staff Inspiration Award recipients on May 29 at the Alumni Center. A reception with heavy appetizers and a cash bar begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the annual meeting and awards presentation at 6:30 p.m. A dessert reception will conclude the evening's activities. The event is open to the public and costs $10 per person. Register online or by calling 294-6525. The 2015 Faculty-Staff Inspiration Award recipients are:

Craft supplies swap is May 2-3

The Workspace, in the east basement of the Memorial Union, will host a craft swap on Saturday, May 2 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) and Sunday, May 3 (1-4 p.m.). Workspace craft leftovers, including beads, fabric, jewelry findings and retro sewing patterns, will be available. Bring items from your own stash – things that you aren’t going to use, but can’t bring yourself to throw away. Swap for new or new-to-you supplies. The Workspace also will have select art supplies available for sale.

Request MU ramp parking permits online starting April 28

Parking permits for the Memorial Union ramp go on sale April 28 with a new online request process. Permit requesters should fill out the form. Processing will take up to five business days, after which permit holders will receive an email notifying them that their pass is ready for pickup at the MU's hotel desk. Subject to final approval by the state Board of Regents on April 23, these passes will be for sale on April 28:

  • Annual (July 1-June 30, 2016), $522
  • Summer (May 9-Aug. 15), $177
  • Fall semester (Aug. 18-Dec. 19), $226

Cyclone Voice finals are Thursday night

Thirteen Iowa State students, selected from 32 entrants in an April 6 preliminary round, will compete in the Cyclone Voice finals on Thursday, April 16 (8 p.m., MU Great Hall, doors open at 7:15 p.m.). Singer-songwriter Andy Grammer (of recent Honey, I’m Good fame) will host the event and perform a few songs during the judges' deliberations. Cyclone Voice is free and open to the public.

John Pappajohn to speak April 20

Entrepreneur and philanthropist John Pappajohn will speak about entrepreneurship and his personal journey during a talk on April 20 (4 p.m., 1148 Gerdin Business Building). He will recognize the 2015 Pappajohn Student Scholars, followed by a brief reception in the Gerdin Commons. The event is free and open to the public; RSVPs are appreciated.

New PeopleAdmin 7 training opportunity

University human resources invites all PeopleAdmin 7 users to register for a new course called Open Session. This training gives users a chance to meet with experts in recruitment (applicant tracking) and classification and compensation (position management), ask questions, and get more hands-on training. Submit requests for summer and fall library reserve

Instructors who wish to place required materials on reserve at Parks Library for summer or fall semesters should submit requests now. The forms are online.

"Farmland" screening and discussion is April 23

The student organization ISU Corn Growers will host a screening of the 75-minute documentary, Farmland (2014), on Thursday, April 23 (6 p.m., Benton Auditorium, Scheman Building), followed by a panel discussion with three local farmers/producers. The film looks at the lives of six American farmers and ranchers who share their perspectives on modern agriculture. Its intent is to bridge the gap between food consumers and food producers. This screening and discussion are free and open to the public.

Undergrad research symposium is April 14

An estimated 145 students and 113 research presentations will be featured at Iowa State's ninth annual Symposium on Undergraduate Research & Creative Expression on Tuesday, April 14 (9 a.m.-5 p.m., Memorial Union). The event begins at 9 a.m. in the Pioneer Room with remarks by assistant professor of kinesiology Ann Smiley-Oyen. Concurrent topical sessions follow in various rooms. A poster presentation will be held in the Gallery from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Fly-In Pancake Breakfast is April 18 at Ames airport

Fly in or drive to the Iowa State Flying Cyclones Club's annual Fly-In Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, April 18 (7-11 a.m., 2508 Airport Dr.) Admission is free; breakfast is $6 for adults, $4 for children. In addition to breakfast served by club members, there will be aviation- and technology-related displays and airplane rides (for an additional fee). All are welcome.

Server issue that slowed Inside reader survey has been remedied

An internal server issue at software vendor Qualtrics on Tuesday impacted some early use of an Inside Iowa State reader survey. The problem was fixed. Readers who were inadvertently kicked out of the survey or voluntarily left due to slow progress or error messages are invited to try again. Simply click back into the survey site from your email invitation; you should be directed to the point at which you left the survey.

UCC is accepting registrations for Rock Stars summer program

University Community Childcare is accepting registrations for its summer program, Rock Stars, for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. Activities include trips to the Furman Aquatic Center and Ames parks, bowling, exploring nature, and investigating science, art, drama and playwriting. Cost is based on a sliding fee scale. Library offers research funding workshop

Parks Library is offering a workshop on how to find funding resources for research projects. "FInding Funding: Using Campus Resources" is planned for April 23 (3-4:30 p.m., Parks Library). Learn how to search for funding in the Foundation Center's nonprofit database, and how to search Pivot for funding opportunities and also get email alerts. Preregistration is required. Class to offer free health screenings

Students in kinesiology's HS380 class are conducting free health screenings, which include blood pressure and body composition analysis. The screenings will be conducted in the Memorial Union's Cardinal Room on April 13 (noon-4 p.m.), April 14 (8 a.m.-1 p.m.) and April 15 (8 a.m.-2 p.m.). April 16 hearing precedes regents' Council Bluffs meeting

If you'd like to comment on any items scheduled for discussion at the state Board of Regents April meeting in Council Bluffs, you have several options:

  • Attend one of six public hearings held at the regents institutions and board office April 16-17. Iowa State's hearing is Thursday, April 16 (4-5 p.m.), Oak Room, Memorial Union. All public hearings will be video recorded and posted to the regents' hearings website. Transparency officer Shirley Knipfel will preside at the meeting.
  • Provide written comments to regents transparency officer Sheila Doyle Koppin, sdoyle@iastate.edu.

Meeting materials and an agenda for the April meeting will be posted to the regents homepage by April 14.

Lloyd center to participate in national eye exam program for service dogs

The Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center will provide free eye exams to eligible service dogs in May during an 8th annual event organized through the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. Since the program launched, nearly 30,000 service animals have been examined. Owners or agents for the animals must register on a national website by April 30.

ISU on best colleges for veterans list

Iowa State is among BestColleges.com's 40 best colleges for veterans list. The ISU profile notes the Student Veterans Center's weekly dinners for students who serve or have served with the military and university support for veterans across several key areas.

Open house for all employed students is April 15

As part of National Student Employment Week, the office of student financial aid is hosting an open house on April 15 (7:30-11 a.m., ground floor, Beardshear Hall). All students who have a job, whether on- or off-campus, will be treated to free food, drinks and the chance to win door prizes. Campus employers are asked to encourage their student workers to stop by.

Alumni invited for broomball, volleyball competitions

The ISU Alumni Association and Recreation Services are hosting an alumni intramural reunion June 12-13 that will feature broomball and indoor volleyball competitions. Recruit your old teammates or find some new ones. The tournament is open to male, female and coed teams, who will compete for coveted "Intramural Champion" T-shirts. Collaborative carillon concert is topic of April 13 lecture

An upcoming collaborative carillon performance will be the focus of a presentation on April 13 (4 p.m., MU Campanile Room). Like a similar carillon centennial performance in 2002, this project will take place simultaneously in two venues with two live audiences. April 13 speakers include Chad Jacobsen, a recording engineer and LAS systems analyst; Jeffrey Prater, Professor Emeritus of music; and Tin-Shi Tam, Cownie Professor of Music and university carilloneur.

Next EPSCoR Energy Policy seminar is April 6

Richard Plevin, UC Davis Insititute of Transportation Studies, will present "Is Performance Regulation Based on Life Cycle Assessment Feasible?" as part of the Iowa NSF EPSCoR Energy Policy seminar series on April 6 (3:40-5 p.m., 1306 Elings Hall). The seminar is free and open to the public. 

It's time to renew ISU library materials

ISU Library material that was borrowed on "extended loan" and due on May 8 can be renewed beginning April 1. Renewals can be made in person or online. Books can't be renewed by telephone or email. There is no grace period, so renew early to avoid fines.

Summer Kids' Co'Motion registration is open

Registration is open for Kids' Co'Motion 2015. From July 6-24, students will learn dance technique, composition and how to work together to create a dance performance. The program is designed for kids ages 8 to 18 with all dancing abilities. Sessions will take place at the Betty Toman Studio/Theater in the Forker Building and at the Ames City Auditorium, 520 6th Street. Cost is $210; register before June 1 to receive a $10 discount. Spring egg hunt is Saturday morning

Reiman Gardens and the Ames Jaycees will co-host a spring egg hunt for children in sixth grade and younger on Saturday, April 4 (9-11 a.m., Reiman Gardens). Organized by age, there will be two egg hunts, in which children search for plastic eggs to trade in for a treat bag. The morning also includes activity and craft stations and a visit from the gardens' spring bunny. The event is free and open to the public. Inclement weather will move all activities indoors.

Early registration for SCAVMA Scamper ends April 10

SCAVMA Scamper, the 5K/10K run/walk that encourages you to participate with your dog, will be held April 25 (10 a.m., VetMed). The event benefits the College of Veterinary Medicine's Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA). Early-bird registration is $25 ($20 for students) and ends April 10. After April 10, costs are $30 ($25 for students). Register and get more information online. 

Save the date: International Food Fair is April 18

The International Food Fair returns to the Memorial Union on Saturday, April 18 (11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., MU Great Hall). Participants may sample the cuisine of 13 different countries and regional student organizations. Admission is $3; food tickets are $1 each. The public is welcome.
