Lawrence-Dill named to national board
Carolyn Lawrence-Dill, associate dean of research and discovery for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and associate director of the Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, has joined the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research's board of directors. Through collaboration and public-private partnerships, the foundation funds food and agriculture challenges for the benefit of farmers, consumers and the environment. The foundation was established in the 2014 Farm Bill to complement the U.S. Department of Agriculture's research goals.

Crespi receives Pomerantz endowment support
Professor of economics John Crespi has received the Marvin A. Pomerantz Endowment for Faculty Enrichment award for FY23. Established in 1992 and administered by the provost's office, the endowment award provides additional support for faculty who are deemed outstanding in their teaching, research and outreach. Recipients rotate among Iowa State's seven colleges each year.
LAS' STEM Scholars program makes national list
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' STEM Scholars program received a 2022 "Inspiring Program in STEM" award (see p. 61) from "Insight into Diversity," a magazine that promotes diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education. ISU's office of diversity, equity and inclusion nominated the program for the honor, which each year recognizes colleges, universities and organizations that have established cutting-edge programs, events and initiatives devoted to improving diversity, equity and inclusion in STEM. The LAS college's STEM Scholars program stands out because "membership does not include GPA or ACT/SAT requirements, which have historically placed underrepresented students at a disadvantage," according to the publication.

Finance service delivery model receives 'best practices' award
Iowa State's finance service delivery teams model, implemented in July 2019, received a second place award in the Central Association of College and University Business Officers' 2022 Best Practices recognition program. The program recognizes innovative approaches to addressing challenges facing higher education business operations. Customer service surveys from the third quarter of FY22, sent to finance delivery users following requests submitted, indicated 95% of respondents were satisfied and 98% said their concern was accurately addressed. And a survey of employees working in finance delivery returned an average engagement score of 4.22 (on a five-point scale).

Lawrence named to journal editorship
Novotny Lawrence, associate professor in English and the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communications, begins serving Aug. 1 as editor of "The Journal of Popular Culture" in a five-year appointment. The journal is a peer-reviewed academic journal, publishing essays on all aspects of popular culture. It's the official publication of the Popular Culture Association.

Gorden honored for research into milk quality
The American Dairy Science Association named Dr. Pat Gorden, associate professor of veterinary diagnostics and production animal medicine, as the 2022 recipient of the West Agro Inc. Award. The award, presented during the association's annual meeting in Kansas City in June, recognizes outstanding research in milk quality. Gorden is director of the food supply veterinary program and focuses his research on milk quality, mastitis control and drug residue prevention in milk and meat.
Martin receives distinguished parasitology award
The American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists named Dr. Richard Martin, a Clarence Hartley Covault Distinguished Professor of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine and the E.A. Benbrook Endowed Chair of Pathology and Parasitology, as the 2022 recipient of the Distinguished Veterinary Parasitologist Award. The award honors contributions to veterinary parasitology that are significant and important for understanding and controlling parasitic diseases in animals.

Ames Lab named chemical landmark
The U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory has been designated a National Historic Chemical Landmark by the American Chemical Society. The designation honors the heroic effort by a group of college scientists and technicians to produce pure uranium metal for the Manhattan Project, which was a decisive factor in ending World War II.
Six faculty awarded Fulbright fellowships for 2022-23 academic year
Six Iowa State faculty were selected for a Fulbright U.S. Scholar fellowship for the 2022-23 competition. Two faculty, Tunde Adeleke and Rodney Fox, received Distinguished Fulbright awards, as noted. Below is a short synopsis of their plans.
- Dean Adams, Distinguished Professor in ecology, evolution and organismal biology, to collaborate with researchers at the Institute of Biological Evolution, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain, January-April 2023
- Tunde Adeleke, professor of history and director of the African and African American Studies program, as the Fulbright Laszlo Orszagh Distinguished Professor in American Studies, in the North American studies department at the University of Hungary, Debrecen.
- Rodney Fox, Anson Marston Distinguished Professor in chemical and biological engineering and Hershel B. Whitney Professor, Global Initiatives, as the Fulbright-Tocqueville Distinguished Chair, at Centrale Supélec, an engineering graduate school in Gif-sur-Yvette, France, fall semester
- Joey George, Distinguished Professor in the information systems and business analytics department and John D. DeVries Endowed Chair in Business, to collaborate on research projects with faculty and doctoral students at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, September-November
- Ted Grevstad-Nordbrock, assistant professor of community and regional planning, to conduct research at the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research, Oslo, Norway, fall semester
- Shenglan Zhang, associate professor of Chinese, world languages and cultures, to conduct research at National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei
