Iowa State faculty and staff once again have the opportunity to help their neighbors, including university students, fight hunger over the summer months.
The annual United Way of Story County (UWSC) food drive will be held for 11 days, from Monday, April 27, through Thursday, May 7. Faculty, staff and students can participate by donating food and non-food items (see box) or making a financial contribution. All campus donations benefit the SHOP student food pantries, including the main location at 1306 Beyer Hall and satellite location in Sloss House.
A pervasive need
According to UWSC, nearly one in three Story County households are food insecure, as well as one in three Iowa State students. Food insecurity often is considered a hidden challenge: People may not appear different, but they can't afford a healthy diet or may forgo food in order to cover other expenses.
