A city project to reconstruct Hyland Avenue on the northwest side of campus is scheduled to resume on Monday, April 20. Two of its three components, road replacement at the Ontario Street end and patch repairs near the Lincoln Way end, were completed last summer, but weather and other delays prevented crews from starting the third.
The remaining work will reconstruct Hyland from just north of the Unitarian Universalist worship center (1015 Hyland Ave.) to just south of the intersection with Pammel Drive, which will be inaccessible from Hyland during the project. Commuters accustomed to using the Pammel Hill will need to choose an alternate route into campus.
Similar to work completed last summer, the project will include utility and pavement replacements and the addition of curb and gutter on both sides of Hyland. Additionally, painted bike lanes are being removed from the street and replaced with a wider shared use path along the west side of Hyland from Ontario to Oakland streets.
The east side of Hyland will be reconstructed first, and the west side, including the shared use path, in a second stage. Each stage will last an estimated six to seven weeks, weather permitting.
Traffic light for a shared traffic lane
Temporary signal lights will regulate alternating northbound and southbound traffic in a single lane on Hyland during both stages. This will cause a few minutes of delay, but the road will remain open.
