Busy days in the Pammel Drive barns

Kristen Edgington (right), ISU Horse Farm assistant manager, keeps a firm grip on 4-day-old foal, Emmy Lou, Wednesday while Nikki Ferwerda, associate teaching professor of animal science and Horse Farm manager, perform a wellness check on the foal and her mother, Shesabidformidable. It is foaling season, and so far this spring, 36 foals have been born in the horse barns on the north side of campus. Ferwerda said she expects about 80 foals to be born on campus by June. 

This season, student employees are choosing country musicians' names for the new foals. In addition to Emmy Lou, foals have been named Dixie, Dolly, Cash, Kenny, Lyle, Shania, Billy Ray, Garth and Reba, for example.
