Whether it's content offered asynchronously or an online-only course, instructors use lecture capture equipment to record all or portions of their course content. Recording their lesson allows instructors to easily upload it to Canvas, have content available and update it as needed. Recorded content gives their students quick access to information and the chance to review at any time.
Inside gathered some campus options available to instructors.
General university classrooms
The audiovisual level 1 general university classrooms are equipped for lecture capture services. The information technology (ITS) audio visual experience team supports more than 95 level 1 general university classrooms.Instructors can work with room scheduling or their department scheduler to reserve time to record courses in these classrooms. ITS staff don’t actively monitor Level 1 classrooms during recording sessions. Instructors can email the audiovisual experience team at avxt@iastate.edu to schedule a brief training before using these rooms for instructional delivery.
Panopto, the lecture capture and video management platform that integrates with Canvas, allows instructors to set a regular class recording schedule when classes are in session. Before completing the request, instructors must enable Panopto in their Canvas course. Instructors can specify which days of the week the class meets along with when and where the recording will take place. A level 1 classroom is required, and the audiovisual experience team asks for at least 48 business hours' notice.
Studio 2B
In Studio 2B at Parks Library, faculty, staff and students can record and livestream professional-quality videos with the click of a button. Studio 2B offers two options:
- One button studio: Features convenient startup and shutdown of the station with the press of one button and includes a monitor that can be used as a teleprompter.
- Lightboard: A glass dry-erase board used for recording videos. Instructors face the camera behind the lightboard, and the writing glows as the instructor writes. The camera automatically adjusts so the viewer can read the writing.
Both stations feature:
- Cameras that record in 1080-pixel high definition.
- Height-adjustable tables for presenting while seated or standing.
- Dual monitors to display conference participants, presenter's notes and more.
- Capacity to add content from PowerPoint, an internet browser and other sources in real time.
- Overlay and picture-within-a-picture modes using a touchscreen.
- Options for saving recordings within seconds. Recorded video files can be transferred via USB flash drive to a laptop, or to cloud storage, learning management system and other preferred locations.
Instructors can schedule training with Studio 2B staff.
CELT
The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) will offer lecture capture services through spring semester in nine classrooms. This summer, those classrooms will either be converted into GUCs or returned to the colleges that own them. The impacted locations are:
- Howe classrooms: 1140, 1226, 1242, 1252, 1324 and 1344
- Curtiss classrooms: 0008, 0009, 0013
To consult with the CELT media production team on the specifics of a course transition, schedule an individual consultation through the CELT Help page.
DIY
Instructors also can use personal capture tools (PDF) supported at ISU to record content from their offices or home and post it in a Canvas course. These include Studio within Canvas or a personal cellphone.
