Greenlee students will create Ireland content for KCCI in August

Author: James McNab, Greenlee School

The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication has a partnership with Des Moines television station KCCI aimed at bringing international storytelling to local audiences. As part of this collaboration, a group of student journalists and faculty will travel to Dublin, Ireland, to cover the Aer Lingus College Football Classic on Aug. 23 featuring Iowa State and Kansas State. The students' stories will be distributed across KCCI 8 news platforms.

This immersive field assignment will provide students with real-world international reporting experience, covering Iowa State's first football game held outside the United States. Under the guidance of experienced faculty, the student journalists will pitch, produce and file stories from Dublin, ranging from news packages and feature pieces to digital content and social media coverage.

Greenlee's new sports media and communication major is launching this fall. Students in all the school's majors -- journalism, advertising, public relations, and sports media and communication -- are participating in this experience.

"The Greenlee School works to connect our students with the media profession," said Michael Dahlstrom, director of the Greenlee School. "This partnership with KCCI provides an exciting new opportunity for these students to network and build their portfolio based on their work from this study abroad experience."

The student journalists' trip to Dublin will take place Aug. 14-25. Stories will begin appearing on KCCI 8 newscasts and digital channels in the days prior to the game. The student journalists also will share content with ISU's student news organization, the Iowa State Daily.

"KCCI is excited to partner with students and staff from the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication. Working with and helping train America's future journalists is an important part of our mission as Iowa's news leader," said KCCI news director Natalie Cabieses.
